July 26, 2008 (JUBA) — The Arabic Al-Jazeera news channel reported that the chairman of the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) decided to run for president in the upcoming 2009 elections in Sudan.

Sudan’s First Vice President Salva Kiir (L), also leader of the semi-autonomous south Sudan, looks on as Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir (C) shakes Vice President Ali Osman Taha (R) at the signing ceremony of the new electoral law, approved by parliament last week in the capital Khartoum on July 15 2008 (AFP)

The decision was taken during the meeting of the SPLM political bureau in Juba. Kiir has previously been reluctant to run for president.

Kiir candidacy comes amidst a row between Khartoum and the International Criminal Court (ICC) whose prosecutor is seeking an arrest warrant for Sudan president Omar Hassan Al-Bashir.

The ICC’s prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo asked pre-trial judges last week to issue arrest warrants for Sudanese president Omar Hassan Al-Bashir.

Ocampo filed 10 charges: three counts of genocide, five of crimes against humanity and two of murder. Judges are expected to take months to study the evidence before deciding whether to order Al-Bashir’s arrest.

Kiir who is also the 1st Vice President of Sudan, has called for suspension of the ICC indictment by the UN Security Council (UNSC).

“There is no need rushing to take the Sudanese president to the ICC” Kiir told reporters late on Tuesday during a trip to Uganda.

Earlier this month Sudan’s parliament approved the elections law under terms of a 2005 peace deal which ended a north-south civil war and changed the way wealth and power are shared.

More than 2 million people died and 4 million were displaced in Sudan’s north-south conflict, which is separate from continuing violence in the western Darfur region, where international experts believe more than 200,000 people have died 2.5 million been left homeless by five years of conflict.

This is the right time for Sudanese citizen to exercise their rights and chose someone who is responsible to be the next presedent of this coutry. We don’t like this criminal, Al Bashir who came to power by force. We don’t want a presedent who kills citizens of his Country. Very soon stupid minded people like his vice Taha will follow him to the huge.

Who cares whether Kiir win or lose the 2009 election? In fact losing election will strengthen Southern Sudanese relationship.

There are some individuals who are short-sighed that they don’t know why there should be leadership. If Kiir wins that election, the live of 2 million people lost in two decades war shall be a waste. Just imagine how the windows, orphans and other victims of war are suffering when Kiir is in Juba! What about if taken to Khartuom?

No one will vote for unity of Sudan (which starts with Kiir taking over presidency).

        Dear Friend,

You have surely coined the point. I hate people with light vision on insights on this forum, when the see the heading of the article, they start jumping to sing their only song of SPLA OYEE....., KIIR OYEE, SUDAN OYEE...., Without analizing and understanding the context of the letter. To people, like Deng Agut, who claimed to be ’’ a man far from tribalism, yet his myopic mind cannot enable him to forsee what is happening back home since he is in JUBA,Leave a lone for us who are outside Sudan.

Others are those of Gatwech, Moe, I really dodn’t know the future such persons will make, if others are asending, you are decending, then what are you doing?, who doesn’t know that, there is Genocied in Darfur?

These kind of short sighed people will never develop room for open discussion, thus halting nation’s progress and transquity.

Let us be together, for one common goal, the South and the SPLM.

Vice President Silva Kiir is wise, he cares about the UNITY of the Sudan. Also, i feel him running shows that Sudan shall become more of a democracy! In addition, i liked his stance with the north. I believe Sudan has the potential to be the Greatest and wealthiest country in Africa. Also, Al Bashier is an amazing leader (God Bless him)!

As for the ICC, America doesn’t believe in them, and the ICC are hypocrites! From a legal perspective, Sudan is not part of the ICC thus can not be touched similar to the USA, India and China.

We internally as a people need to stop this hatred of each other fuled by our past colonialists!

The Nubians whom now speak arabic, the Darfour tribes whom the majority speak arabic and our african speaking brothers and sisters are one. We are a great people, from Denka, to the Fur to the nuba. Our history is Great and Greatness is HONOURED when mentioned with our people! We bow down to NO ONE but GOD, ALLAH.

Our figures from Al Mahadi, to the Sultan of the Denka to the Mc Nimir to the pharoes are nothing less than AMAZING! We started the idea of DEMOCRACY! ALMOST 2100 years ago before the concept of USA even came into existance!

The moment we realise that ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL UNDER GOD is the moment we become united. We become strong. We become leaders!

    AND NOT FOLLOWERS!

GOD BLESS ALL OF SUDAN AND ITS PEOPLE AND MAY HE OPEN OUR HEARTS AND ALLOW US TO TOLERATE EACH OTHERS DIFFERENCES AS ITS THE DIFFERENCES THAT MAKE US A SPECIAL PEOPLE!

    Amen!

This obviously a very welcome gesture by Kiir for the people of South Sudan, but do not get carried with yourselves.

Firstly Bashir is still extremely popular amongst Northeners for the MAJOR economic boom intiated by his contacts with foreign nations and major developments of infrastructure and also (though not reported) amongst the majority of Darfuris as was seen by his trip to Darfur the past week.

Kiir firstly is a former rebel who is responsible for serious war crimes against the Nuer Tribe and has no appreciation to the majority of Muslims in Sudan and seeing that Sudan is 70% Muslim, Kiir has no chance of getting their votes seeing as it is prohibited for Muslims to be ruled by a non Muslim.

Lastly, Kiir has hardly done anything to build the infrastructre of South Sudan, despite the 50/50 oil wealth sharing agreement.

      Dear Omer,

Do you know the source of that economic boom you are talking about? It is the blood of South Sudan, south Blue Nile, south Kordofand and Darfur people that bring damn boom to the north and you should not be proud of killing innocent people for the sake of getting rich.

Kiir will win the Presidency because Sudanese people need a President who protect lives, bring stolen rights back to the people, create a constitution that respect human rights and give people a freedom to chose their religion.

Muslims are majority in Sudan no doubt about that. But they have been islamised by force and not choice. If a secular constitution that protect individual rights is stablish right now in Sudan the majority of those Muslims will denounce Islam and chose different religion in 24 hour.

      Hi

      Omar.

I see you have the mind which caused the war in Sudan.

First of all, most of your people think the majority in Sudan is Muslim, and i could prove you wrong , by telling you that Sudan is half Muslim and half Christian.

its looks to every one that majority is Muslim as you mentioned in previous.
And that is the policy which makes us to refuse your melancholic administration, since Sudan independent, by saying that Sudan could not rule by none Muslim as you said in your comment, and if i ask you about none Muslim if they are Sudanese or not? And if you answered me yes they are Sudanese. Also, i would tell you put yourself in position of none Muslim. How will you feel? I may name you with your ancestors the selfish nation, who had been created by evil not the God.

Omar, if you are not aware about yourself, you are not wise even your mind may have small part of damage, which makes you not to recognize others, or may be you had been affected by yellow fever when you were child.

Omar i could tell you frankly that i must vote for separation in 2011, because of your ill minded, that won’t improve for ever even in one minute.

I was one of the people who were seeking for unity, but to day i change my mind to the separatist person.

long live for separation, long to the south state in 2011.

God bless our land for ever. Amen

What is the objective of Kiir to run for Presidency of the Sudan? Is it to hasten the process of a Separate south Sudan or is it to continue bandaging the ill-intentions of the fanatic Muslim dominated NCP of annihilating the Black Race in the Sudan and replace it with the so-called Arab?. This is in their Black Book with Turabi as key architext.
We know that if you go there Mr. Kirr, you will be blood washed with the monies of China, Russia-those aides of of Lunatic Beshir that perpetrated annihilation of the Black race in the Sudan; and push back the Black Southerners to neocolonialism under the Arabs again.
You better rethink your intentions to run for presidency of the Sudan and consolidate efforts to have a separate Southern Sudan with you as its first president.
if we can get the southern Sudan even before 2011, then we have evrything to rise to the economic status of the North, that syphoned all our resources to our detriment in the last 50 years.

      SHAME ON OMARS

Sorry, doubting Thomases still existed even after ICC proved to the world that Omar is a war criminal? This other Omar who is now supporting the first Omar is another pair of shoes (other problem). What do omars want to do in Sudan really? One Omar committed massive criminal cases in both south and Darfur and the other Omar is too blind to see what is under the carpet. Mr. OMEN no one knows whether your war criminal will survive the opposition coup attempts which are being organize under the ground as per the last announcement of anticipated issuance of an arrest warrant for your toothless bull dog. Is it because of you people being Arabs together that you don’t even see all cons that are eating up the government of your senior Omar? Omar had been killing people in the south previously with chemical weapons, blazed many villages to the ground in bintiu and displaced people to allow for mining of oil which he consequently sold to buy more chemical weapons. Why do you omars like fighting with chemical weapons and not simple guns? And what will happen when all of us would have bought chemical weapons? Shame on you omars of the north. You shall go to hell with your greed. As per salva’s decision, he has a right and approval from the world because we need to change Arabs dominant at the mantle of the power. Why do Arabs want to rule others forever? Kiir can bring major changes in the country as well as solution to Darfur problems which are a big thorn in Sudan. The propagation by Omar that kiir killed nuer people is a tool coined to depict kiir in eyes of nuer as a bad leader but it will have no an effect because nuers have developed the sixth sense nowadays to extent of not being lured into nonsense talks by kleptomaniacs. They are not longer the nuers of 1991. Wonderful, omars of today don’t see that the ethno- tectonic plates are now drifting towards each other. No more inciting of tribes against one another in the south.

It is ashame Mr. Omer if religion and politic are not separated yet by people like you. Judging from your writing, one would assume that you are an educated man. Furthermore, one would assume that you are aware of how many of our people have died due to Islamic system since 1956. Base on these two possibilities, one would call you stupid because you have failed to acknowledge that this Islamic system of yours in Khartoum have harm the country for too long and it is forcing Southerners into separation. But nothing one will do to change radicals like you but to wish luck in understanding that God universal and we all know it....Religion is just a conception that may be wrong or right. Kiir will win whether Mr. Omer vote for him or not because your view is base on religion and many Northerners have already understood that religion and politic are separate.

It’s a good step mr. Kiir if you have the capability.Remember not to be incited by anyone because you walk like the president.Hungy Lions, Hayenas, Tigers,Leopards, etc want Mr.Antelope to run for president in the upcoming 2009 election in Sudan so that they can gobble him up.

If mr. Antelope could win the elecion and use all his wisdom to get rid of them like what Idi Amin did to notorious Indians in Uganda, the true Sudanese would be very grateful because I see no reason as to why part of our land should be given to the foreigners when they know where they came from.

We don’t care if Kiir Win the electoral as Preisdent of Sudan or NOT, becuase our objective is "Southern Sudan Nation" if Kiir win as president of Republic of Sudan there will be no complaint from southerners that we need self determination becuase we get what the world want, even the NCP (Northerners) will say "what they and we give them the president of Sudan", for this reason we don’t want Kiir to win the electoral vote.

I think this is a good point and should be raised. with no doubt it is the right of Commander Silva to run for the position, and considering what the SPLA achieved in south Sudan in term of stability and development, regardless the difficulties and obstacle created by NCP. I think both the movement and the chairman have the potential to govern Sudan, and they do have good chance. but as raised above do the people of south Sudan want to be united with the rest of Sudan ? because this is a question should be answered before Silva run the election. this will be one of the points he must answer clearly before he start campaigning
otherwise he will be concpiring with NCP to disattract votes fom any other candidates that could be more acceptable and democratic for the northerners Sudanese.

As a fellow Dinka with Kiir, I will not vote for cowardic marked head big dude who acheive nothing but cooperating with devil person so called Beshir who committed genecide to southerners before and now with Dafurian.

I can vote for Amum if he run for presidency because we need a brave man who react when necesary or seeing their people kill, like what heppened in Abyei when soldiers of devil guy called Beshir killing civillians. Kiir who surrounding himself with corruptioners people will not help south at all. They think that if they confront beshir like the way Amum did, they might lose money.
Kiir surrogats people hindering the development of south, especially road that can facilitates movement of food, medicines, reinforcement when there is fighting like whan happened in Abyei while back, and so on.

Kiir government treat southern sudan like fishing camp where you have special home somewhere else, and it is true that those ministeries who know where money come from and got most of it, had rent or bought very expensive house from other country. So, that country their economics is boom but our economic is fail because our money doesn’t circulates or recycling amoung ourselves.
And this will not let southern sudan get ride of craps around them such as in Juba.

Mr Bona Malual make some comments yesterday that omer should not be arrest and he says he is making tour to all AFRICANS Countries in order to suspend the arrest of omer.omer should be left alone to face ICC because it is his failure to stop fighting in darfour, there is no point of assisting omer to go to Icc.Let him give chance to kiir Mayardit, he is the right person to lead the repubic of sudan because he not the notorous man like Omer who belive that killing people his the only way of solving problems

    Dear southerners,

I would like to thank you very much and especially those contributors in this website.

Kiir has expressed his readiness to contest for presidency to become hopefully the president of Sudan in 2009 polls. That is good of him. Again in 2011 southerners will be granted a chance to vote or self-determined themselves either to join or secede from north Sudan. My questions to all:

1.Assuming that by miracle Kiir, happens to win the next year’s elections and becomes the President of Sudan, who will then become the president of south Sudan?.

    2. And again, southerners are going to vote for Separation and if they will succeed to form an Autonomous South, how would president Kiir work with all these conflicting interests?

    3. What is really the stand of Kiir in regards to the coming 2011 Referendum?. I begin to wander what a confusion is going on in the south pertaining New Sudan, Right to self determination, Unity and so on blocks . Our leaders must be clear in what ever stand they together with the masses are aiming at ahead of time, through their policies than to leave people in quotes and dilema.

I sense danger or people will revisit CPA, to accomodate these forseerable conflicting matters of interest to favour some people at the expense of the poor masses or otherwise something must be done ealier before the mess.

I will be happy to get answers from you friends. Thanks

Let me conclude the above mention comments on 2009 Sudan election. foks This is the time when we need to consider the trueth, politically it is not about wining so then you get the name president, we need to remember that we are voting for the newer future of Sudan and for sake of the new generation which still to come. what would be benefit if Mr Kirr wins the election and what would be the benefit if our current president when the election Bashir remains on his spot? we need to know that we’re in hand of constitutions, we need hope for Sudan especially Southern Sudan. as most argue on this context about muslims and christian relating to this election yes it has a big impact but we need to focus on our current constitution and that is to build the new Southern Sudan. For God sake lets consider this question `WHY DO WE CALL ELECTION IN 2009` when CPA is on it’s way! is it something that Bashir and Taha had plan regarding his Prescution agains humanity? is it to avoid arrest if he fails the election or is it to dominatly destroy the CPA in 2011 so then no more talks could be held. Brothers and Sisters lets be mind open, if myself Panoum want to stand up and have the name Sudan President i would say its a God gift so then i would look at my right hand and say let me do good to my people so then reward would be greater. Bashir likes money and wealth not the benefit of his fellows africans, and to Kirr he is a greater man but what as he done to be assure of now? may the best man win in 2009 election. God bless you all my fellows Southerns.

Juba town is very.. very.I wish , our candidate for the Presidency lead us , during this coming week’ end to clean up the town . Salva that we used to know would have easily over run the Presidency, but , by protecting very corrupt members of the party that we are well aware that to have bought houses in America , England, Australia, and Uganda. My vote will be held , until I see again Salva is Salva of the SPLA , not current Salva ,the President of GOSS.

Mr. inexperienced (Gatnath) you must believe that we Dinkas are behind Kiir. Make sure that we are not divided like you NUER who are divided over cattle raiders like RIEK, sycophants and chance grabbers like matip and money minders like Gatluak Deng and Dak Duok Bichok. How do you people need to be deal with? It’s like you are reformed by Dinka and still you don’t change. Side with the Arabs but you will be tired one day one time. Dinkas will get their fair share of resources through fight and democratic means unlike you NUER who is getting your share through betrayal and sale of oneself. Kiir will win even if you don’t vote for him. Dinka shall lead his blind brother NUER. If Dinka led you through the 48 years of war, why do you think Dinka will not do it now? Let me tell you. Dinka is never tired and never rush like a RUSSIAN DOG when it comes to struggle for one’s rights. Convert people and be baptized in the name of south Sudan. Anyhow, I couldn’t be bothered by your emotional reaction to my comment on Kiir’s candidacy for presidency. And trying hard to exclusively own the money that does not even come from any single land!! How greedy you are?????

Dear Mr. Kiir’s blinded follower, I don’t know what make you so emotional that you misbehaved toward people that have nothing to do with this debate!! Is that the way Dinka bring up their kids?

Anyhow, I couldn’t be bothered by your emotional reaction to my comment on Kiir’s candidacy for presidency.

You have mentioned the names of many Nuer persons that you regard as Arab collaborators, but forgetting your own Dinka opportunist and traitors such as Abel , late Arock Thon, William Nouny Bany, Bona Malual among others who have been betraying southern Sudanese case for ages and yet are the one that run your corrupted self-centred Dinka dominated GoSS as we are speaking!

Is anyone that criticises Kiir is an Arab collaborator, in your naïve thinking?

you talked about Dinka being a reformers and liberators of Nuer! Who showed you the way to Ethiopia and who used to feed and accommodate Anyanyas SPLA,during the struggle, Nuer isn’t ?

Now, to know how much you(Dinka) are short-sighted, you seem to have forgotten the prise paid by other tribes during the war! And trying hard to exclusively own the money that does not even come from any single land!! How greedy you are????? what if the war broke out again, how are we going to liberate south!! think my friend

It’s necessary for Salva Kiir to declare himself a candidate for 2009 general election provided he is a political party leader like others but declaring candidacy doesn’t mean one is hopefully going to win the polls but it’s good for him to place himself before the voters to be judge for what he has done because he has been in power since 2005.
The most controversial thing about Kiir ’s candidacy is KIIR is a UNIONIST do Southern Sudanese support UNITY? if your answer is yes then go your way.One more other thing which seem twisted is the just concluded SUDAN CENSUS which indicate that SOUTH SUDAN is mere 10% 0f Sudan population but no one in the GOSS who denied the result, can’t you reckon that it’s another style designed by NCP to rigged the election. In another way Sudan may end up in power-sharing government which is the most common governance in Africa after election dispute like what happened in Kenya and the other one under way in Zimbabwe.
Finally the candidates are not known yet for South Sudanese to decide wether to vote for UNIONIST or SEPARATIST.
