Madison Knox is a captain on the McGregor High School varsity softball team, so she's a leader among her peers.

But her mentorship goes beyond that. Madison helps out with the seventh-grade team in McGregor and gets to coach her younger sister.

"She reminds me a lot of myself," Knox said. "She's really hard on herself. I get to help her grow and progress as a player.

"When I was in middle school, I was terribly hard on myself and I think that's one thing that I really wish I could go back and tell myself, is that you are a good player and it's all going to turn out okay. You're going to succeed if you just keep working hard."

For Madison, that hard work has paid off in the classroom as well. She is currently ranked third in McGregor's Class of 2020, and after graduating, plans to study at Tarleton State before eventually enrolling in medical school.

"She makes everybody proud," McGregor softball coach Andrea Holdbrook said. "I don't see that changing when she goes off to college."
