GE to merge aircraft-leasing business with AerCap Holdings

General Electric (NYSE: GE) is in advanced talks to merge its aircraft-leasing business with AerCap Holdings (NYSE: AER), as first reported by WSJ.

Why it matters: This would create the world's largest jet-leasing business, valued north of $30 billion, which is certain to invite antitrust scrutiny. It also further streamlines GE, which has been shedding ancillary businesses since Larry Culp took over as CEO in 2018.

The United States and European Union on Friday agreed to suspend for four months the tariffs imposed in the long-running dispute over subsidies to Airbus and Boeing.

Why it matters: The agreement is a major step in resolving the 17-year dispute, which has resulted in tariffs on billions of dollars of exports to and from the U.S. and Europe.

This week I'm driving the 2021 Buick Envision, a rare American SUV that's built in China.

The big picture: Greeted with controversy when it debuted in 2016, the Envision occupies an important spot in Buick's all-SUV lineup, sandwiched between the stubby little Encore and the family-hauling Enclave.

A Boeing 777 plane made an emergency landing in Moscow on Friday due to a warning of possible engine failure, the New York Times reports.

Why it matters: Boeing planes still face a degree of public doubt following two deadly 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019. Two additional Boeing planes have experienced issues this month, with a Boeing 747 cargo plane malfunctioning in Europe and a Boeing 777's engine failing over the Denver area.

Used car prices soar

Don't be surprised if used cars are harder to find and more expensive for years to come, auto industry experts are warning.

By the numbers: The average price of a used vehicle surged nearly 14% between January and December of 2020 — roughly 10 times the rate of inflation — to over $23,000, AP reports.

Plane's safe landing recalls Boeing's golden days

Photo: Chad Schnell via AP

Saturday's scene of a burning jet landing safely back at the airport harkens back to the day when Boeing was an engineer-driven company known as the gold standard for aviation safety.

Why it matters: That reputation took a major blow after two crashes involving the 737 MAX. Boeing has since spent billions, and the FAA has sought to overcome its own reputational hit, reengineering and re-certifying the MAX in pursuit of the same long-term safety record as its earlier airliners.

Toyota still bets on hybrids despite competitors' focus on EVs

Toyota's best-selling vehicle, the RAV4, is available as a plug-in hybrid, which goes 42 miles on battery alone. Photo: Toyota

While competitors like GM and Volkswagen are going all-electric, Toyota argues that a mix of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and EVs is better for the environment.

Why it matters: Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) aren't for everyone, and a new analysis shows that even people who own BEVs don't drive them as far as the average gasoline-powered car.
