SNL alums to re-enact 'worst film ever' for SF Sketchfest

"Plan 9 from Outer Space" has a special place in the canon of weird films. Ed Wood's 1959 low-budget, so-bad-it's-good "masterpiece" revolves around aliens trying to save earth from its own destruction, then reanimating the dead and sending an army of zombies to, well, almost destroy humanity in their own right. It's been called the worst film ever made, and now it's being remade live by SF Sketchfest, with the help of an all-star cast of SNL alums and comedy stars on Thursday, Oct. 29.

They've assembled a stacked crew that includes everyone from "Better Call Saul" star Bob Odenkirk to "SNL" Ladies Man Tim Meadows. "Simpsons" writer Dana Gould will oversee the production, and has even acquired one of the prop UFOs used in the original film. Other stars include Kat Aagesen, Maria Bamford, Bobcat Goldthwait, Jean Grae, David Koechner, Laraine Newman, Oscar Nunez, Jonah Ray, Paul F. Tompkins, Janet Varney and Baron Vaughn. Eban Schletter will provide the music.

For comedy fans eagerly awaiting the 20th anniversary of the festival (postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19), the organization has also opened up their vaults of archival footage with 20 of their funniest sets available for rent for $3 a pop, including performances from W. Kamau Bell, the cast of "Best in Show" and Patton Oswalt.
