'Saved by the Bell' Renewed for Season 2 at Peacock

Peacock's Saved by the Bell sequel has earned a passing grade.

The streamer has renewed the series for a 10-episode second season, a little short of two months after its premiere on Peacock. The show is a sequel to the 1990s teen comedy and features several original cast members but focuses on a new set of students at Bayside High.

"I'm thrilled that Saved by the Bell has been renewed. I've been blown away by all the love for the show and can't wait to go back and make more episodes,” said showrunner and executive producer Tracey Wigfield. "Hopefully we stay on Peacock for many more seasons, and then in 30 years, somebody does a reboot of our reboot and invents the threeboot."

In the new Saved by the Bell, Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), now governor of California, gets into political trouble for closing too many underfunded high schools and proposes sending affected students to some of the more affluent schools — including his alma mater, Bayside. An influx of new students gives the privileged kids of Bayside a needed dose of reality.

The cast includes Haskiri Velazquez, Josie Totah, Alycia Pascual-Peña, Mitchell Hoog, Belmont Cameli, Dexter Darden and John Michael Higgins. Original cast members Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and Mario Lopez are also regulars, and Gosselaar recurs.

Like other streamers, Peacock doesn't reveal viewing figures for its series (nor is the platform currently included in Nielsen's streaming rankings). Saved by the Bell has received mostly positive reviews from critics, with The Hollywood Reporter's Inkoo Kang noting the reboots is "funnier than the original show ever was."

Saved by the Bell joins A.P. Bio in earning a renewal at the six-month-old Peacock. The streamer has also extended the run of late-night series The Amber Ruffin Show.
