KU Pell Advantage


The Pell Advantage covers the cost of tuition and fees for 30 credit hours per year and up to four years of undergraduate study. The Pell Advantage is a combination of state, federal, and institutional funding for eligible Kansas students.

Scholarship amount

Approximately $11,166 per year

The Pell Advantage covers tuition and campus fees (excludes course fees) for 15 credit hours per semester for four years and is not available for the summer term.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible, you must fulfill all the following:

  • be a Kansas resident
  • graduating from high school in 2020-21
  • student must have submitted application for admission by Feb. 1.
  • enroll at KU for the first time in fall 2021
  • be admitted to KU
  • submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by Feb. 1
  • be eligible to receive a federal Pell Grant
  • have a 3.25+ GPA/4.0
  • have a 22+ ACT (1100+ SAT)
  • be responsible for paying your tuition and fees (students whose tuition and fees have been waived — because of participation in ROTC, for example — do not qualify)

How to apply

There's no separate application for KU's Pell Advantage — just submit your KU admission application and the FAFSA by the deadlines above. Accepted students who meet all the criteria will receive the KU Pell Advantage.

Renewal criteria

To be eligible for renewal, you must fulfill all the following:

  • file a complete FAFSA by Feb. 1 annually
  • continue to be eligible to receive the federal Pell Grant
  • meet KU's satisfactory academic progress standards
  • enroll in a minimum of 12 KU hours each semester
  • complete 24 KU hours each year and maintain a cumulative 2.5 KU GPA.
