There are nearly 7,000 languages spoken in the world today. When you study a language, you gain greater insights into the varied cultures that these languages represent, and thus gain a greater appreciation of the world and your place within it. Learning a foreign language gives you access to new literature, new music, and new art. Combining foreign language skills with other areas of expertise multiplies job opportunites, opening up travel-filled career paths in business, technology, diplomacy, journalism, education, the military and countless other fields. You may also be required to take a foreign language as part of your degree program.

The University of Kansas is a national leader in the study of foreign languages, offering more languages than any university between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. We are home to five regionally-focused centers that provide scholarships to cover tuition and living expenses for students who excel in learning foreign languages. KU's Office of Study Abroad, which helps to send roughly a quarter of KU's undergraduates abroad before graduation, offers scholarships to make an international experience possible for all students. KU is also home to over 2,000 international students from over 105 countries, who inform our understanding of world events and prepare our students for today's increasingly globalized society. Knowledge of a foreign language (or multiple languages) will be a crucial skill for competing in the marketplace of the 21st century. The future will be conducted in many languages other than English. Don't miss out!
