Summer Associate Program
The Academy Summer Associate Program is an intensive, 10-week development program for emerging leaders. Associates learn about issues impacting California and the nation and manage research and advocacy projects under the direction of a Greenlining staff member.
The learning environment is based on combining experiential learning opportunities, individual development and team participation. Each Summer Associate experience is unique and is shaped by the current policy focus of their program area. Associates present their findings and projects in both a written and oral report at the end of the program.
Summer Associates participate in leadership skills workshops, attend meetings with key stakeholders, and conduct site visits to community, government, and corporate entities. Associates are exposed to community leaders, new issues, and new methods of advocacy. Associates receive regular mentorship, professional and personal skill development, and are given opportunities to interact with the media, write reports/press releases, testify at key policy hearings, and participate in key meetings with top government officials, corporate CEOs, and political leaders. Applying for the Summer Associate Program
Candidates for the Summer Associate Program must complete the Academy application. Competitive applicants have had at least one related experience.
Based in our Oakland office, the Summer Associate program is an intensive development program and learning community for emerging leaders. Associates are assigned to a Greenlining policy team and gain exposure to the policy development process through a research and advocacy capstone project. Associates participate in leadership discussions, skills building workshops, and conduct site visits to community, government, and corporate entities. Associates receive mentorship and coaching, and are given opportunities to interact with the media, write reports and blogs, balance multiple priorities, testify at key policy meetings, and participate in meetings with top government officials, corporate leaders, and community leaders.

Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- No degree or experience requirement to apply, BA in related field preferred
- Committed to championing causes that serve low-income individuals and communities of color
- Proven ability to work in a manner that respects differences in race, ethnicity, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance
- Willingness to try on new techniques and approach unfamiliar experiences with curiosity and openness to the process; approaches challenges that push beyond their professional comfort zone with determination, heart and deep commitment to their personal growth
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to complete writing and public speaking assignments with high quality
- Team player who inspires collaboration, lifts up the work of others, and maintains balance and perspective with patience and a sense of humor
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively while demonstrating flexibility with others to set goals, resolve problems, pivot assignments and make decisions that move forward the work
- Ability to create and maintain friendly and professional relationships with staff, other participants and key stakeholders
- Ability to prioritize tasks, strong organizational skills, and an ability to work independently.
- Strong writing and computer literacy of PC-based Google Drive and MS Office Programs
