Virtual GOAL Mile

Run apart, stand together this Christmas

No Mask for Hunger

Help vulnerable communities in crisis this Christmas

Our story

GOAL works with communities facing extreme poverty and crisis

GOAL was founded by former Irish Press journalist, John O’Shea in 1977 when he saw the plight of street children in Kolkata (Calcutta) first-hand. Over the last 43 years GOAL has responded to many of the world’s major humanitarian crises, working with vulnerable communities in more than 60 countries.

Our story

Where there is need, GOAL is present

Every day, more than 2,400 GOAL staff work to improve the lives of those affected by conflict and natural disaster. Last year they reached more than five million people in 13 countries across Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

Our story

Reaching communities far and wide

GOAL delivers programmes in Emergency Response, Food & Nutrition Security, Resilient Health and Sustainable Livelihoods. We also promote Global Citizenship, recognising that we all share responsibility for a better world.

Conflict, instability and climate change have created unprecedented levels of need.

GOAL's Emergency Response programme takes an integrated approach, with its work focused on saving lives, alleviating human suffering and building resilience for the future.

Long-term health inequalities need urgent commitment and intervention.

From emergency assistance to sustainable development. Resilient Health works on two fronts - meeting the challenge of chronic health emergencies as well as taking a systems-based approach to help communities build a healthier future.

Even today, 800 million people across the world do not have the food they need.

Food poverty is increasing, with the situation fuelled by rapid population growth, increased conflict, displacement and climate change. GOAL is focused on innovative and sustainable ways to achieve food and nutrition security for the most vulnerable.

The informal economy accounts for more than half of the global workforce.

GOAL works in areas of extreme poverty and inequality, where livelihoods are often made through self-employment, micro or small businesses. Our team is helping to make sure that these people are given the chance to build strong and sustainable livelihoods.

The world is increasingly connected. Action is no longer limited by traditional boundaries or borders.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for us all; addressing poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.

GOAL links its Global Citizenship programme with the SDGs and is helping people by fostering global citizenship, GOAL is helping people understand that how we live and act can, and does, make a difference.
