Update on KUMC Visitors: Per the May 2020 announcement regarding KUMC Visitors, the August 31st date has now been extended to January 31, 2021. This means that all on-campus visiting student experiences will continue to be suspended due to COVID-19 as cases have increased over the last month in the Kansas City metro area and other states. Please see the details below.

The University of Kansas Medical Center remains committed to and values visiting high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to the KU Medical Center campus for a variety of internships, clinical observerships, research active-learning, and other learning experiences. However, due to the evolving nature of COVID19 and the resulting effect on the medical center as well as prioritization of - KU Medical Center students’ learning needs, all on-campus visiting student experiences will now be suspended through January 31, 2021, and will be reassessed at that time. This includes all campus tours, individual applicants through the KU Medical Center Education Experiences (KEE) program, all external students covered under affiliation agreements, and students from other on-campus university workforce preparation programs.

There may be situations in which visiting students can have an entirely “remote” learning experience by holding virtual meetings with a faculty sponsor, conducting off-site research, writing a manuscript, analyzing datasets, or completing other research or mentoring activities. These off-campus experiences are allowable and will require the normal application process via the KEE portal. All KEE requirements will apply, except for the immunization and safety training requirements. KU Medical Center network access will be permitted if needed for the planned experience, and other software or hardware arrangements may be made at the discretion of the sponsor if feasible. These experiences should be organized by the sponsoring faculty member or the visiting student in conjunction with a willing faculty member, as no matching of sponsors and students will be feasible at this time for a remote learning experience.

While visiting medical students are not eligible for many of these programs, it should be noted that the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program for fourth-year electives has also announced some changes in its application process for Fall 2020 elective rotations.

Regarding international visitors, international clinical observers, international research learners, and international clinical elective students (not degree-seeking students nor international employees), managed by the Office of International Programs(OIP), please contact kconnelly@kumc.edu or refer to the program’s website.

We will update the KEE and OIP websites and other KU Medical Center communications when these opportunities are open again. You may also email bmanning2@kumc.edu for individual questions about the KEE application process. While we regret having to limit student learning opportunities, the safety of all students, staff, and faculty is our primary concern. We truly look forward to hosting these programs at KU Medical Center in the near future.

All Clinical Observational applications are being accepted and will be processed by Hillary Podrebarac (hpodrebarac@kumc.edu), Volunteer Services Administrative Assistant. Research Observational Learners and Research Active Learners will be processed by Barb Manning (bmanning2@kumc.edu), Visitor Coordinator in the Institute for Community Engagement.
