Why should I support The Intercept?
As a nonprofit organization, The Intercept relies on donations from our readers and listeners as a key funding source for our journalism. As a member, you help us to hold the powerful to account, give voice to the voiceless, and tell stories you won’t find anywhere else. The Intercept’s membership program ensures that we will remain strong and independent, and demonstrates public support for the kind of fierce, adversarial journalism we do every day.

Your entire contribution to The Intercept goes to support projects and journalism for The Intercept. You can find our 990s at the bottom of the “about” page on First Look Media’s website.
Why is The Intercept and Intercepted asking for reader donations? Isn’t it funded by a billionaire?
eBay founder and philanthropist Pierre Omidyar funded our launch in 2014 with the belief that independent perspectives are vital to a vibrant culture and thriving democracy. He created a nonprofit to house The Intercept in order to insulate our mission from commercial pressures and ensure that we could operate with full editorial independence.
To build on his initial investment and ensure our independence and sustainability over the long term, we launched a membership program. We believe that relying on diverse sources of support — including reader contributions — is a healthy model for journalism.
Is my donation disclosed to anyone?
The IRS requires 501(c)(3) organizations to list donors who give $5,000 or more on their 990s. We also list donors who have given more than $1000 on our website.
