Cox Sr. ’42, who died Thursday, November 5, 2020. He had recently celebrated his 99th birthday on October 20th and remained active and engaged with family and friends until his passing.

This is a somber day, as we remember the 2,977 souls of all races, religions and ethnicities that were lost in New York City, Washington, D.C., and outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after terrorists hijacked and deliberately crashed four commercial airliners on Sept. 11, 2001.

Like you, I am outraged at the killing of George Floyd, following those of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor and countless other black men and women before them. Sadly, these recent events have brought back memories of painful racist encounters many of you experienced on our campus. My words in an earlier email did not adequately express my anger at another senseless death of a black person, and for that I apologize. Allow me to be clear... Black Lives Matter. You matter.

2,634 graduating SMU students were looking forward to accepting their diplomas at the May graduation commencement ceremony this weekend but due to the coronavirus pandemic, plans changed.
