Free Income Tax Return Preparation Help

If you need help with your taxes, you may qualify for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE). The IRS also offers free online tools to make it easier to do your taxes.

Free Tax Return Help for Eligible Taxpayers

Find out if you qualify for the following free tax return preparation services:

  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - VITA offers free tax help to people who generally make $56,000 or less, people with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English. IRS-certified volunteers explain tax credits and prepare a basic tax return with electronic filing.

  • Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) - TCE focuses on questions about pensions and retirement-related issues. It offers free tax help to all taxpayers, particularly to those who are 60 years old or older.

Find the VITA/TCE programs near you. Use the VITA/TCE checklist to learn more about the services of VITA and TCE and what you should bring to your appointment.

For the fastest information, the IRS recommends finding answers to your tax questions online. You can also call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or TTY: 1-800-829-4059. This option works best for less complex questions. Keep in mind that wait times to speak with a representative may be long.  You may also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you’re having a tax problem.

Free Federal Tax Resources for Seniors and Retirees

There are free services that help seniors and retirees with their taxes, including:

  • Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE)
  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). 

Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE)

TCE answers pension or retirement questions for people who are 60 years and older. Use the AARP Foundation Tax Aide Locator tool to find a TCE site near you.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

VITA offers free tax help to people who:

  • Make $56,000 or less 
  • Have disabilities, and
  • Speak or understand limited English.

Find your local VITA center.

Help with State Taxes

You may be able to get help preparing your state tax return or qualify for state tax relief programs. Contact your state's tax department for more information.

The IRS offers resources to answer your federal tax questions and address topics that matter to older taxpayers.

Military Tax Guidance and Tax Preparation Help

Service members, veterans, and their families may be able to use MilTax, a free tax preparation program, to get help filing taxes. The IRS also offers tax benefits for military members and their families.

Tax Benefits for Military, Dependents, Veterans

The IRS offers tax information for military, retirees, and veterans. It covers tax benefits and tax handling for various situations and groups. These include:

  • A combat pay exclusion for active military

  • Disability pay benefits for veterans

  • Death benefits for survivors of military members

Tax Help for People with Disabilities

If you have a disability, you may be able to use Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) services to get free help with your taxes. The IRS also offers accessible tax forms and publications.

Use the VITA/TCE checklist (3676) to learn more about the services of VITA and what you should bring to your appointment. 

Accessible Tax Forms and Other Help 

  • Contact your local IRS office for information on services for people with disabilities.

  • Find tax forms and publications for people with disabilities at IRS.gov Accessibility. You’ll find a list of tax products to download that are accessible to a wide range of people. For hard copy Braille or large print, call the IRS at 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676). Keep in mind, wait times may be long.

  • Use the American Sign Language (ASL) videos created by the IRS.

  • People with hearing impairments can contact the IRS by TTY/TDD 1-800-829-4059
