The Summit District is now open. There is very little snow accumulation at the summit of Haleakalā and it is predominantly ice. Please stay on designated paths and trails as there may be fragile plant life hidden underneath the snow like the Haleakalā silversword.

It’s Groundhog Day! Or, Marmot Day here in Denali National Park. Groundhogs might not be native to Denali, but the park is home to their cousin, the hoary marmot. And regardless of whether any marmots see any shadows, Denali is sure to have 6 more weeks of winter! NPS Photo

Did you find the moose in our earlier Tweet? If so, congrats! Moose surveys are repeated every winter over several target areas. Stats help us understand habitat quality, density, survival rates and help to inform management about subsistence hunting decisions.

Have what it takes to be a park biologist? Can you find the moose? Researchers often wait for fresh snowfall so wildlife stands out better against the landscape. Check back later today. We’ll point it out and share more about our aerial moose surveys.
