    fought bravely but on September 27, 1939, after days of shelling and bombing, the city surrendered. Germany annexed lands along the 🇵🇱 western border and turned the remaining occupied territory into an occupation zone, where terror and death were a part of Poles' life.

    By late September 1939, with constant heavy German bombardment of the city, the situation of 's population became increasingly tragic. 81 years ago, General Juliusz Rómmel, who led the defense of Warsaw against the German invasion, started capitulation talks.

    Eugeniusz took a 1,000+ photos during the 63 days of the 1944 . He thus documented the life and struggle of 🇵🇱's capital, its resistance fighters and civilians, under German occupation. Caught in an artillery barrage, Lokajski was killed in 1944.

    in 1940, 🇵🇱 officer Witold deliberately had himself arrested in a street round up in German-occupied . Sent to , he managed to gather evidence of the crimes committed there, and smuggle it out. Pilecki was the only known volunteer.

    On September 17, 1939, the USSR invaded and, by the end of the invasion, took half of 🇵🇱, as Stalin had agreed with Hitler under the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. Soviet terror against civilians in the occupied lands was brutal: Poles were imprisoned, deported and executed.
