Teaching and learning

Discover a new world of learning

University is a world of excitement, challenge, opportunity and new experiences - and that includes the teaching and learning.

Lectures and seminars are at the heart of most degree courses, and at Southampton you'll be taught by world-renowned experts. But you'll also have independence - time in which to read and research your topics, and to develop the skills that will set you on the path to success.

Our research, from building sustainable cities to bringing the past to life with virtual reality, is changing the world for the better. Much of it feeds back into our course content, so you'll benefit directly from that too.

And our flexible learning options give you the freedom to pursue your interests and grow your knowledge in more than one subject area.

Wherever you are, you're always learning

A major new teaching and learning facility has opened on our Highfield Campus in time for the 2019/20 academic year.

The modern seven-floor building, named the Centenary Building to mark 100 years of our Highfield site, features lecture theatres, seminar rooms and a street-level café.

Other ways to personalise your degree

Our undergraduate degree courses have flexibility built into them, giving you the chance to grow your knowledge and skills in more than one subject area.

As well as optional interdisciplinary modules, many courses also allow you to choose a Minor subject alongside your main programme.

Minor subjects

Many undergraduate degree courses give you the chance to study a Minor subject alongside your main subject, but in a different area. Subjects you can study as a Minor include everything from Criminology to Creative Writing.

The power that students have in their pocket in the form of a mobile phone is something we can harness in education. It's essential as educators that we stay at the cutting edge and always look for even newer ways to continue to use that technology to ensure that our students can maximise their potential.

Access support whenever you need it

There's plenty of help available to support your learning needs, as well as world-class facilities  and digitally equipped study spaces designed to help you get the most from your time here.

One of the best things I did was make contact with my Personal Academic Tutor. Just having someone to talk to, who understands what is going on, is fantastic. Having a PAT means you are never alone.
