Virtual town hall to update school year starting in Black Belt

State Superintendent Eric Mackey and local superintendents from Black Belt county and city school systems will take part in a virtual town hall meeting Saturday at 1 p.m. to update parents on the start of the school year and how it will be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sens. Malika Sanders-Fortier of Selma, Bobby Singleton of Greensboro, and Billy Beasley of Clayton are hosting the event, according to a news release from the Senate Democratic caucus.

The event will be on Facebook Live on the Facebook page Deputy Senators of District 23. Sanders-Fortier represents District 23.

“This will give parents an opportunity to hear the state superintendent’s plans, along with insight from local superintendents,” Sanders-Fortier said. “We are inviting the superintendents to provide a 5-to-7 minute presentation as well as field questions alongside Dr. Mackey.”

Superintendents scheduled to participate include Christopher Blair of Bullock County, Hattie Shelton of Dallas County, Corey Jones of Greene County, Jason Burroughs of Lowndes County, Marcia Smiley of Perry County, Avis Williams of Selma City, Jacqueline Brooks of Macon County, and Andre’ P. Saulsberry of Wilcox County.

In addition to the livestream on Facebook Live, people can listen by calling 312-626-6799. The meeting ID is 874 5427 1487.
