Frequently Asked Questions: Digital Subscription to AL.com

GENERAL DIGITAL SUBSCRIPTION QUESTIONS

SUBSCRIPTION TROUBLESHOOTING QUESTIONS

GENERAL DIGITAL SUBSCRIPTION QUESTIONS

Why am I being asked to subscribe to AL.com — now of all times?

We’re asking our loyal readers to purchase a voluntary subscription because we need your support.

Sending reporters to breaking news events, holding the powerful accountable through authoritative investigative reporting, producing journalism that’s relevant to you and reflects the strength, diversity and creativity of Alabamians is an expensive proposition in the best of times. This is particularly true now. Just as the coronavirus pandemic has hurt other local businesses — and put many of our readers out of work — it’s affected AL.com dramatically, too. Advertising, our primary source of online revenue, has been significantly impacted. In order to keep doing what we’re committed to doing, we need readers like you — readers who visit AL.com frequently and rely on us for trustworthy local reporting — to support us by purchasing subscriptions. Here’s where to get yours. We’re grateful for your support.

How much does a subscription to AL.com cost?

Just $10 a month. You will be charged monthly unless and until you cancel your subscription. You may cancel your subscription at any time by calling 205-325-2211 or by visiting myaccount.AL.com.

How many stories can I read before I’m required to subscribe?

As many as you want. For now, your support of AL.com is voluntary. Your subscription helps us underwrite the work of our reporters and editors.

What do I get with a digital subscription to AL.com?

Unlimited access to everything we offer, including:

I already subscribe to The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times, or the Press-Register. Do I need to subscribe to AL.com?

No. If you already subscribe to The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times, or the Press-Register, we thank you for supporting our work.

SUBSCRIPTION TROUBLESHOOTING QUESTIONS

I keep getting messages that I need to turn off my ad blocker. How do I do that?

Sorry, we no longer allow users to visit AL.com for free while using an ad blocker. To continue using AL.com, you’ll need to either turn off your ad blocker or purchase a subscription and visit the site in a logged-in state. Here’s a YouTube video that shows you how to turn off your ad blocker.

How do I sign in to my account?

Easy. Visit any page on AL.com and click on the little image that looks like a person’s face in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. (It’s between the Subscribe button and the little magnifying glass.) Click on “Sign in.” Enter your email address and password and click “Sign In” again. Voila! The little person’s face should change to your initials. (You’ll find other tools and help for managing your account if you click on your initials.)

I’m already a subscriber. So why am I still seeing messages asking me to subscribe?

Thank you for being a subscriber. While AL.com subscribers will continue to see some subscription messages initially, the on-site experience may change in the future. In the meantime, for us to know you are a subscriber while you are reading AL.com, you need to be signed into the site. To learn how to sign in, see the question above.

I am a subscriber — and signed in — but I’m still seeing messages urging me to subscribe. How do I make them go away?

If you are still seeing subscription messages after you sign in as a subscriber, you may need to clear your browser’s history, cookies and cache. Through its settings, each browser has a different way of clearing this data. Here are YouTube tutorials that show you the way to do it for the most common browsers: Internet Explorer | Chrome | Safari | Firefox.

If, after clearing your cookies and cache, you’re still experiencing problems, please email digitalservice@al.com or call 205-325-2211.

Why do I have to log into AL.com on my phone when I already logged in on my laptop/desktop/tablet? Can’t the site just see me wherever I am accessing content?

Unfortunately, no. Our systems see each device you use separately. To enjoy the full benefits of your subscription, you must log in on each of your devices.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription to AL.com at any time. Please call 205-325-2211. You may also cancel online.
