Woman identified in deadly Elsmere shooting, suspect arrested

Elsmere woman fatally shot in possible case of road rage

ELSMERE, Ky. (FOX19) - Kenton County police have identified a woman who was shot to death in Elsmere Thursday night.

Police and fire were called to the intersection of Garvey Avenue and Cross Street shortly after 8 p.m. and found Nichole Daughtery, 35, of Covington, dead of multiple gunshot wounds, according to a news release.

Her ex-husband says Daughtery left behind a 16-year-old son.

Joseph Francis Witkowicz, 25, of Elsmere, has been charged with one count of murder, according to the Kenton County Police Department.

An arrest report says Witkowicz stopped his car after being tailgated by another vehicle and got into an argument with the driver.

Officers say Witkowicz got out of his car, drew a handgun, and shot the victim multiple times.

Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders says right now he is not calling this an incident of road rage.

“This is less than 24 hours old, so I don’t like putting labels on things until we know more about the situation,” Sanders said.

He says Witkowicz has his child and partner in the car with him at the time of the shooting.

Witnesses, who didn’t want to be identified over fears of retaliation, say they heard three gunshots and looked outside to see Witkowicz standing over Daughtery’s body.

“He was standing there and the girl went to move to lay on her back and he went over and he shot her four more times. I watched that happen,” one witness said.

Another witness says Witkowicz stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.

“He was calm, cool, collected,” a witness said.

Witkowicz is being held at the Kenton County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond and is expected back in court on July 23.
