Employability

A University of Derby degree nurtures talent and prepares students for a successful career in today’s challenging job market. Combining high academic standards with valuable and varied experiences in the workplace and beyond, we ensure graduates and employers can expect to benefit from skills and knowledge that are fit for the future.

Getting you career ready

Your degree is only part of your story. We’re here to help you tailor your talents to life after university. With CV workshops, exclusive employer events, careers seminars and online support, we’ll help you build the tools that will set you apart when you are ready to look for your first graduate role.

Our great links with industry mean that you’ll have opportunities to apply your learning, with work experience that’s directly relevant to your studies, including placements and real projects set by businesses. We’ll also encourage you to develop your broader skills and experience, ready for life after graduation. You’ll find a range of ways to do this, from volunteering to work abroad and part-time roles, including some at the University.

Flexible and tailored to your aspirations and personal circumstances, we will support you to find professional experience that will help you shine in a competitive market place. You will develop skills before placement to help you gain the most from your experience, while post-practice reflection means that you can continue to develop as you progress through your studies.

Supporting your ambitions

The Careers and Employment Service is proud to support all of our students on their journey towards their future career. No matter what course you’ve chosen or what your previous experience is, we will provide tailored support, with access to services and programmes to help you reach your career goal.

Our careers consultants are on hand for one-to-one appointments where you can discuss potential career ideas, what you are suited to and what you are passionate about, to begin to give your career journey some focus.

Come to one of our many careers fairs. Some are specific to your course while others - like our annual Careers Fair and our Volunteering Fair - are diary dates for all students. These events are your chance to talk with employers about their industry and your future employment potential - including work experience. There's also our employer mentoring scheme, which gives you the chance to connect with an experienced professional and benefit from their knowledge and skills.

Accredited service

We are accredited to the matrix Standard, the Department for Education's measure of high-quality information, advice and guidance. This accreditation reflects our commitment to your longer term career and life ambitions, rather than just finding you a job. Advice and support go beyond job hunting to include volunteering and enterprise, and continue after you have graduated.
