Type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM), a chronic disease of both insulin resistance and inadequate insulin secretion, is increasing worldwide. Although type 2 DM can affect people at any age, it is most common in patients aged 45 years and older. Despite available diagnostic measures and treatments, type 2 DM is associated with microvascular, macrovascular, and neuropathic diseases, and according to the World Health Organization (WHO), it was the seventh leading cause of death in 2016.
