Lepidosauromorpha was named by Benton (1983). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gauthier et al. (1989) and Ezcurra (2016).
It was reranked as the unranked clade Lepidosauromorpha by Gauthier et al. (1989), Laurin (1991), Renesto and Bernardi (2014) and Ezcurra (2016).
It was assigned to Neodiapsida by Benton (1985) and Laurin (1991); to Diapsida by Carroll (1988) and Peng et al. (2001); to Reptilia by Meyer and Zardoya (2003); to Diapsida by Renesto and Bernardi (2014); and to Sauria by Gauthier et al. (1989) and Ezcurra (2016).
