Often times, it feels virtually impossible to fit an entire home's worth of stuff in your petite pad — let alone carve out designated areas for a living room, dining room, and bedroom. But, even once you discover all the right game-changing hacks for your unique space, you still need to make your place aesthetically pleasing. The problem is, most retailers create products for a full home — or, at the very least, a place with more than one room. While decorating your small space to the nines might be difficult, it's not necessarily impossible. In fact, there are a handful of retailers that offer stylish solutions for your petite pad; you just need to know where to look.In honor of our Small Spaces Month, we asked several interior designers to share their go-to shopping destinations. As professional decorators, these experts have dedicated their careers to sprucing up homes of all shapes and scales — yes, even shoebox-sized studio apartments. From museum-worthy stores to websites filled with unique, antique finds, one thing's for sure: Tiny living has never looked so good. The pros give us the inside scoop. In a perfect world, we'd live in a spacious penthouse pad with a rooftop and breathtaking views of Manhattan's most iconic skyscrapers. But, in reality? A shoebox-sized apartment is the epitome of New York City living. It makes sense: After all, how else would you fit over 8.4 million people on a teeny, tiny island? But, New Yorkers are notorious for being scrappy, resilient, and resourceful — and their decor game is no exception. Whether they're living in a petite pad in the East Village or a studio apartment on the Upper West Side, these city dwellers know a thing or two about living in a small space. Not only can they fit all their essentials into their teeny, tiny quarters, but they also have a knack for making their pint-sized pads aesthetically pleasing.Need some more convincing? We asked some of our favorite city dwellers to show us their apartments and share the small-space hacks they always follow. While some of these notable New Yorkers follow the typical tiny-home tricks, how they incorporate them into their respective apartments offers endless design inspiration. But, whether you pick up a small-space hack or discover how to give your own home an Instagrammable vibe, one thing's for sure: The places below prove a tiny, New York City apartment can be totally swoon worthy. We're taking notes. Leaning into a stripped-back, monochromatic aesthetic, Berk's design challenge was simple — create a space that doesn't scream "faux Tuscan architecture" like many of the surrounding new developments in the desert."The location is in the western-most region of Las Vegas and nestled in the Red Rock Canyon foothills," Berk begins, when asked how this project first came about. "I have worked with Pardee Homes for several years, and the team approached our firm to design three models for this new neighborhood — each having three distinctly different styles."No stranger to a wash of black paint or a slab of dangerously dark stone, in this 3,620-square-foot Vegas residence Berk goes full contrast in the kitchen, living, dining, and master bedroom suite. He finely balances surrounding spaces with natural elements, earthy materials, and reclaimed exposed beams. The designer tackles a "healthy budget" with resourcefulness, sourcing light fixtures everywhere from Walmart to World Market, West Elm to One Kings Lane."I have always loved black," Berk admits, of his monochromatic approach. "It has both a grounding effect and a formality that can really elevate an interior. I think black has made a huge impact in today’s interior design trend book, but it’s also something I adopted early on and have loved using for years. We use it a lot in our design — note the dark Caesarstone in the kitchen — and while it definitely creates a moodier vibe, it also has the effect of offering contrast in a home with a lot of white walls and open spaces. It’s important to have both the light and the dark — and to balance it all out."The results are far from dark, drab, or off balance. Instead, this is a space that resonates with current design trends, appeals to the contemporary buyer, breaks up expansive living areas, and speaks to a timeless — while also timely — black and white style code.Sherwin-Williams Paint; Mid Continent Cabinetry; Monogram Appliances; Caesarstone Countertop; Gus Modern Counter Stools; CB2 Bowl; Target Vase; Amazon Mortar and Pestle; Amazon Bowls; World Market Dinner Plates; World Market Vase; Mid Continent Cabinetry; Burke Decor Accent Chairs; Noir Furniture Coffee Table; Erik Lindstrom Area Rug; Burke Decor Accent Table. In came D.C.-based designer Kerra Michele Huerta, who was charged with injecting fresh, vibrant touches into the space.“She wanted something neutral and calming. He loved bright colors,” Huerta says of her clients. “My goal was to modernize their aesthetic while using calming colors, and focus on adding lots of pattern, texture, and warmth to make the home feel neutral without being boring.” When it came time for the move, the owners decided it was time to part with their existing furniture, some of which was oversized and had been transported to many different houses over the years.“A lot of it was tired,” says the homeowner. She notes that while she felt compelled to outfit the colonial with more traditional pieces, she wanted a “fresher, more modern look” in the new house.Minted Artwork; Circa Chandelier; Burke Decor Wallpaper; CB2 Mirror. If you're pretty diligent about your wardrobe, why not try doing the same thing for your bedroom?Designers agree that editing is essential for creating a serene space for sleeping. “It’s human nature to accumulate unnecessary things. So, every now and again, it’s important to declutter and clean out," says Christine Markatos Lowe of Christine Markatos Design. "A bedroom should be a restful place to begin and end your day. So, having an airy space is key.”“Regular evaluation and editing is vital for both a wardrobe and bedroom. [Do it] at least twice a year for both, maybe more frequently depending on how often you purchase new things,” advises Matthew Hufft of architecture and interior design firm Hufft. “Your bedroom should be a sanctuary. There should be nothing in the space that causes anxiety or stresses you out in any way.”Clearing things out is also a great way to make room for some new pieces of decor or furniture that you’ve had your eye on. You’ll feel better about splurging on new throw pillows or a dresser if you first donate or sell some of your old stuff. The real key is to just take a step back, decide what in your room makes you happy, what doesn’t, and go from there. “I truly believe that surrounding yourself with beauty will enhance your mood and enrich your life,” says Donna Mondi of Donna Mondi Interior Design.Ahead, we asked design experts for tips to help you tackle the job of editing your bedroom. Here’s what they had to say. Your chic mid-century modern chairs and morning iced-latte runs have been traded in for a lumpy twin-size bed and a coffee maker from before you were born. This weird new reality you’re sharing is a blessing (and sometimes a curse depending on how you look at it). But, it’s tough being in the midst of trying to balance your gratitude for the best home-cooked meals with your impatient attitude towards your family’s wild antics. Everything is out on the table now. One day, you’re probably crying happy tears that you’re not alone in your closet-sized studio apartment, and other days, your forced, family game nights are making you want to quarantine from quarantine.Yes, you’re grateful. But, after years of not living together and suddenly spending an indefinite number of weeks chilling 24/7 under the same roof is a whole new experience you have to learn how to navigate. As an ode to those of you sharing lockdown with the bunch you grew up with, here are some memes about quarantining with your parents that are so true it hurts. It's a great opportunity to discover new brands, see unique, creative products, and just enjoy the curated displays of quality interior pieces.Unfortunately, with the rise of COVID-19, the Offsite couldn't happen IRL this year. Sight Unseen co-founders Jill Singer and Monica Khemsurov decided they wouldn't let the crisis stop the designers from showing off their hard work.So for 2020, the Offsite is heading online. Not only did the co-founders create a web-based curation of furniture and objects from 57 designers and brands, but they also partnered with 1stdibs to place the items up for sale.“We took Sight Unseen Offsite digital in order to unite contemporary designers and provide a much-needed platform for getting their 2020 collections out to the public during this crisis, and our partnership with 1stdibs is a key element of the equation,” said Monica Khemsurov.“If we're providing participants with visibility among a broad international viewership, 1stdibs is exposing their work to a large audience of interior designers and collectors — offering them a critical outlet for sales in a moment when few such outlets exist," she continued. "Together we’re helping to ensure that contemporary design still has a voice during this unusual time.”Along with discovering cool new pieces to covet, we love going to the Offsite to scope out trends. Our biggest takeaway from this year's event? Minimalism is officially over. Design is heading in a bold direction — and we believe it may be there to stay.Want to see why? "This project was a great opportunity for us, as we have been designing small homes for ourselves — and for our friends —since we started our practice, many of them are first-time homeowners."Inside the multicolored structure — a space that measures in at a modest 850-square-feet, neighbors their own Highland Park home, and is currently leased to a creative couple — Sundius and Ichiki make full use of the surrounding natural light. The designers showcase the unique stepping ceilings and exposed beams while carving out drywall to enhance the feeling of height and refract the sunlight. Accent walls in shades of buttery yellow and electric blue bring a sense of adventure, while featherweight light fixtures reaffirm the feeling that all is open and airy at this address."We set out to make a beautiful architectural object, of course, but we typically start from the inside out — first focusing on the spatial volume and then designing a space that feels expansive," the creative couple admit. "Light, form, ceilings, a sense of flexibility, adaptation, and art infuses all of our projects."White Macaubas Quartzite Custom Splashback; Kenmore, Bertazzoni, G.E. While we are so here for parking in front of your TV or laptop to get your sweat on, it's a good idea to carve out a designated space to do your daily (okay, more like every other day) routine. Whether you want to convert a small corner of your apartment or upgrade your garage, setting up a home gym of your very own will come in handy long after the pandemic is over. We’re guessing, though, that you probably don’t want your gym to feel completely separate from your home's aesthetic. To inject some style into this practical space, we’ve asked two experts to share their words of wisdom: Eliza McNabb, an interior designer with Hyphen & Co., and Becky Shea, founder and creative director of Becky Shea Design. While McNabb has designed a variety of boutique fitness studios throughout New York City, Shea has implemented gyms in several residential homes. Both designers share their insights ahead. Let's take that home workout to the next level.
