    The 1st recorded peregrine falcon nest on Alcatraz! 3 months after spotting peregrines mating on the Water Tower, biologists found 2 fledglings testing their wings with their parents nearby. Adult peregrines, among the world's fastest birds, power-dive up to 200 miles per hour!

    There was another group persecuted at that time in what is called the Lavender Scare.  + individuals were seen as threats to national security. It was believed that the fear of being outed made them susceptible to blackmail by communist sympathizers. 2/3 📸: NPS
