Do not give (or allow access to) identified data about use of library services to ANYONE outside the library EVER. Not the student-services office. Not the institutional research office. Not even the freakin’ provost or chancellor. Do not. Not ever. It is a betrayal of trust.

We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from everyone who is contributing to Signal's ongoing operation and development. We're a 501c3 nonprofit and we couldn't do this without you. If you are on the fence about donating, you can give in here:

Many years ago interviewed an older gentleman as part of a study I was conducting. He said “Republicans are people who will withhold food from 100 people out fear that 1 might not need or deserve it. Democrats will feed 100 out of concern that 1 might really need it.

For graduate students & junior scholars: My speaking fees in 2019 and 2020 have ranged anywhere between $500 and $7500. That is post-tenure, post-book. The only time I asked for $8000 (billion dollar org), I was ghosted. I limit free labor to internal/Penn & close colleagues.

I've got a new survey out that looks at ethical decision-making in the practice of library assessment. If you practice assessment in any part of your library work, please consider responding to and sharing this survey! 💫🌱

So, on Election Day, I volunteered as a poll worker. It was my 1st time doing so, & I want to talk about a particular aspect of it here, especially b/c I think it's relevant info for folks who have experience working with personal info as data (incl. librarians, DHers, etc.) 1/

It's been a long, strange four years. It's also been one of an (unfortunately) historic nature, which is easy to overlook amidst the daily news cycles. Here are ten historic firsts the U.S. has seen under Trump—none of the which we'd seen in the 240 years prior:

the trump campaign’s public position is that the president can only win if a large number of ballots are not counted in key states, and the media should be very clear about that for the next 48 hours.

Friendly reminder that the widespread industry pivot to streaming instead of physical media is VERY SPECIFICALLY a way to screw audiences out of their basic, fundamental rights as consumers.
