Whither Washingtoniana? rumored plans

Something to bring to the November 9 community meeting at MLK Library at 6:30 p.m.

A few rumors indicate several access points are planned:

Georgetown’s Peabody Room, the Library of Congress, and the Historical Society, with most kept in storage. Library of Congress service point would provide the widest access.

No idea how “collections” are really disposed or what would be accessible at what location, not what kind of intellectual (online/card catalog) access would be available.

Collections include:

  • books–open stacks
  • books–closed stacks
  • books, etc.–uncataloged
  • microfilm
  • archival materials
  • vertical files — 80 file cabinets
  • maps
  • atlases
  • periodicals
  • newspapers
  • Star photograph morgue–collection of 1 million plus
  • Historic photograph collectiosns–80,000 + images

What percentage of any of this would be available is unknown, but issues easily apparent simply looking at this list.

Much (40%) of the collection is not listed in the online catalog, so the card catalogs need to be accessible.

“The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, at 901 G St. NW, will have a major modernization to meet the current and future needs of D.C. residents. The building, designed by modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, was designated an historic landmark in 2007.
