4 more Birmingham police officers test positive for COVID-19

Four more Birmingham police officers have tested positive for COVID-19.

The officers all are assigned to the city’s East Precinct. Sgt. Rod Mauldin said the East Precinct has been temporarily closed for decontamination and deep cleaning. The department also has provided additional testing for all East Precinct officers.

Mauldin said the BPD developed a mobilization plan at the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic to deploy personnel to assist patrol operations during a time as this. The mobilization plan includes staffing protocol to assure quality police services are continued without interruption to the community.

The first Birmingham police officer tested positive for COVID-19 in May. Authorities said the employee in that case came in contact with the virus while off duty with a family member.

Authorities have not said whether the four East Precinct officers are believed to have contracted the coronavirus on duty or off duty.
