Upshur Books and History Press Present a panel featuring historians with books that cover different aspects of the era. There will be presentations, Q&A, and a signing.

The event is free and open to the public, and it will feature refreshments!

Panelists:
Heather Butts is the author of African American Medicine in Washington, D.C., a public health lawyer, and professor of bioethics and health law at Columbia and St. John’s School of Law. African American Medicine in Washington, D.C. profiles renowned and unknown nurses, surgeons, and physicians who both saved and improved black lives during and after the Civil War. The book covers the establishment of the Washington’s Freedman’s Hospital, which is now Howard University Medical School, the careers of Dr. Alexander Augusta and Charles B. Purvis, and the heroic creation of a medical infrastructure in wartime.

Lucinda Prout Janke, author of A Guide to Civil War Washington DC, is a historian and writer. Her book portrays how the capital adapted and changed from when the first shots were fired in 1861, as it prepared for invasion. There were army camps in Foggy Bottom, the Navy Yard on Anacostia was a beehive of activity, and even the Capitol was pressed into service as a barracks. Local citizens and government officials struggled to accommodate the fugitive slaves and troops that crowded into the city. It is an intimate portrait of a community on the front lines of war.

Garrett Peck is an author, historian, and tour guide. He leads various tours through the Smithsonian Associates and delivers lectures at the Library of Congress, historical societies, and literary clubs. He is a member of the Association of the Oldest Inhabitants of DC and is on the board of the Woodrow Wilson House and the Arlington Historical Society. His sixth and most recent book, Walt Whitman in Washington, D.C., explores the great American poet’s decade in DC, in which he served as a “hospital missionary” and a federal clerk. He also became the poet laureate and established a brilliant literary circle.

   What kind of camera was used at the time which made the double image? or is this simply sort of opticom lense negative?
