Stanford Health Policy is recruiting its Summer 2020 cohort of undergraduate fellows to conduct research with one of our faculty members.

Stanford Health Policy Undergraduate Research Fellows will spend 8-12 weeks working full-time on a project, closely mentored by one of our faculty members. This paid internship would allow you to spend the summer pursuing answers to compelling and impactful health policy questions, globally or closer to home. The class of fellows will sit in the heart of our center and gain exposure to Stanford Health Policy’s experts through personal interactions, mentorship, and seminars. The full-time fellowship is designed for the Summer term, but successful fellows may have the option to stay on part-time in the subsequent school year. The fellowship may also support conference travel to present findings. 

From pediatrics to geriatrics, law, economics and decision science, faculty  are tackling everything from emerging pandemics to health disparities in the developing world; from the public health crises of opioids and gun violence in the United States to the alarming rise of noncommunicable diseases around the world.

Students selected for the summer internship will become Health Policy Research Fellows at Stanford Health Policy, joining this vibrant intellectual community.

"The Undergraduate Health Policy Research Fellowship enables students to work in the dynamic, interdisciplinary research and policy environment at Stanford Health Policy and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International studies on projects to improve health through better health policy," says Douglas K. Owens, director of Stanford Health Policy's Center for Health Policy and Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research. "It is a great opportunity and we look forward to working with students."

Eran Bendavid, the fellowship co-coordinator and an associate professor of medicine at Stanford Health Policy, noted that the internships are open to undergraduates from every part of the university.

"We are excited about working with talented undergraduate students who can bring skills, energy, and diverse perspectives to bear on some of the most complex questions facing humanity today,” Bendavid said.

The other coordinator of the summer program is Michelle Mello, a professor of law and medicine.

Current Stanford freshmen, sophomores and juniors may apply from any major; no prior experience is required. Around five summer internships will be offered and selection will be based on evidence of intellectual engagement, commitment to research, and fit with the applicant’s proposed mentors. The application deadline is March 23^rd for the summer of 2020 and selection notification will be made around April 15th.
