This is a reboot of the film series. The first Mortal Kombat film premiered in 1995, and a sequel came out in 1997. A reboot was in development for a number of years, and didn't really begin to pick up steam until 2015. In May 2019, it was announced the reboot was in pre-production and was targeting a 2021 release date.
