    this is quite a thread from a Minneapolis councilman

    Politicians who cross the MPD find slowdowns in their wards. After the first time I cut money from the proposed police budget, I had an uptick in calls taking forever to get a response, and MPD officers telling business owners to call their councilman about why it took so long.

    The phrase "if you show that you want to work, if you show that you're interested in having a job" strikes me as very condescending, but it's also striking that he was right there, among the people, speaking to them face to face.

    Meanwhile the protests had calmed considerably. But on Monday, 75 or so people showed up for a meeting outside Roosevelt HS to coordinate a response. A state rep was there. No credible evidence of stashes of accelerants was presented. But people were asked to join a group chat...

    One couple took it upon themselves to repeatedly check the perimeter of the Oromo church and the high school, and generated not a small number of concerned text messages. Long story short, nothing happened. Every report of stashes of accelerants in our part of town was debunked.

    Early Monday, two men in white T-shirts bicycled back and forth on 28th Avenue S, one carrying a baseball bat. “Which way did that car go?” they shouted. Which car? “The one with no lights on,” they said. No such car had passed that way. They peeled off and disappeared.

    as we exchanged numbers a woman's voice a block over shouted "get out of our neighborhood!" and headlights turned into the alley. We all rushed to the alley, as more people shouted. "What's going on?" was the basic message. Nobody knew. I never saw the vehicle.

    At one point, a block over, a neighbor shared this video with me. I still don't really know what to make of it.

    This video is from 9:40 pm in the alley behind the 3900 block of 28th Ave S, immediately north of Roosevelt HS. Dude talking about "trying to stay out of the line of the helicopters." Neighbors don't recognize him. Holding something in left hand. Could be nothing, but it's weird.

    Any car moving through was scrutinized by hundreds of eyes. Residents demanded to know where passersby lived. Troubling reports ricocheted through text message groups and across neighborhood chat boards. A suspicious black F-150. A man with a southern accent.

    My neighbor lifted weights in his garage with the light on until late. I strapped my infant child to my chest and milled around in my backyard and alley, chatting with neighbors, looking at my phone, watching the school and library.

    Even the police were asking people to look for "incendiary materials" that were "hidden in bushes." My neighbors spotted a propane tank behind a business and quickly removed it. (Turned out later it belonged to the business.)

    Incendiary materials and accelerants (like water bottles filled with gasoline) have been found hidden in bushes and throughout neighborhoods in Minneapolis. If you find or see anything like this, please call 911.

    Rumors of a fire at the library were debunked but my block, including the Roosevelt Library, was on high alert. We looked for "accelerants" and they were supposedly around. By the Riverview Theater. On a nearby corner. Rumors were repeated, amplified, passed off as fact.
