Oakland boutique owner turns boarded-up storefront into mural honoring black lives lost

As clothing store owner Taylor Jay saw the protests over the death of George Floyd erupting across the country during the weekend of May 30, a customer called her to say she'd better board up her windows.

Fears of looting intensified among the nearby Oakland shops and many rushed to protect their storefronts - most had only just reopened for curbside pickup due to the coronavirus pandemic. Jay decided to take a different approach. She printed out a few signs that said "black owned business," posted them in her windows and left that night hoping for the best.
