Ever wonder why Cuphead’s gloves are sometimes white and sometimes yellow? There’s a reason for that.
We’re going back to the 2017 classic Cuphead for this little tidbit. The game played by millions on PC and Xbox One before making its way to the Switch last year (and also to Tesla vehicles, by the way) put the tiny indie developer StudioMDHR on the map. Cuphead is a meticulously crafted adventure featuring hand-drawn art in the style of animated cartoons from the 1930s, and it also has some of that same animation style’s quirks.
One of those quirks has to do with the color of the characters’ gloves.
Twitter user @Blandothemando pointed out that sometimes Cuphead and Mugman’s gloves are white while at other times they’re yellow. This perplexing inconsistency was so vexing that @Blandothemando actually asked StudioMDHR what’s up with that a few years ago, and StudioMDHR responded.
“We needed to keep true to the ‘sometimes yellow gloves’ of the era,” the studio responded. And they’re right. Go look at Mickey Mouse and other cartoon characters from the era and you’ll often find that their gloves are either white or yellow without any consistency at all. That inconsistency is represented in Cuphead where the menu features Cuphead with yellow gloves but he has white gloves in the actual game.
StudioMDHR didn’t stop there. That inconsistency is also represented in promotional imagery for Cuphead. You can even see it in the trailer for the upcoming DLC, The Delicious Last Course. At the beginning of the trailer Cuphead has yellow gloves but later has white gloves at the end.
We’re still waiting to hear from StudioMDHR on just when The Delicious Last Course will arrive. It was pushed back to sometime in 2020 last year, and with COVID throwing everything into disarray, it’s hard to say when or even if it’ll still be out this year.
On the plus side, Netflix’s Cuphead cartoon seems to be on track.
