Should I Move With Family or Professionals?

Moving is always stressful, both physically and emotionally. There are certain aspects of the process you can't change and will have to deal with but there is one area in which you can make a decision, and it will be a major one: do you hire professional movers or ask your friends and family if they will help?

Questions to Ask

Asking yourself these questions will help you make a decision:

1. How much stuff do you have to move? If all your things can be moved in two loads or less, friends may be a better option. If you have a lot of things, especially larger items, hiring professionals can reduce a day-long endeavor into only a couple of hours.

2. How much experience do your friends/family have moving? Will they be able to navigate tight corners without damaging walls or your furniture? Do any of them know how to load a moving van for the greatest efficiency? Professionals move items for a living and know the tricks that make navigating easier, and they have learned how to make the most of the space available.

3. Will friends and family help willingly? Professional movers are hired to move things. You don't have to worry about them feeling you are taking advantage of the relationship or taking them away from something else they feel is more important. If you know the help is given willingly and doesn't create hardship or inconvenience for your friends, then ask for their help. If you aren't sure, consider a professional.

4. How far are you moving? If you're only moving down the block or across town, it might make sense to settle for your friends or family. If the move is further away, professionals will not only be more cost-effective but also time-saving.

Now, consider the pros and cons of both choices.

Friends and Family

Pros:

*Can make the process fun.

*Can be less expensive.

*Flexible hours.

Cons:

*Plans can change and leave you stuck on moving day.

*It will take a lot longer.

*Breakages aren't financially covered and neither are injuries.

Professionals

Pros:

*Move can be completed quickly and efficiently.

*You can count on them showing up.

*They have the experience to move with minimal damage.

Cons:

*More expensive.

*Hours are less flexible.

*You may feel you have no control of the process.

A Third Choice

If you still can't decide which option is best for you, consider combining the two. You could ask for friends and family to help with some of the smaller items and hire professionals to move the larger pieces. You may also ask for help packing and unpacking from friends or family and leave the rest to professionals. You can decide which things are best completed by professionals and which you feel comfortable with letting your friends and family help with.

Whatever you choose, take time after the move to relax and enjoy your new home. You've worked hard on making it happen and deserve a break.
