We really enjoyed the free tour of the Capitol Visitor Centre - the guide was informative and they have an excellent 13 minute video at the start which gives you a historical overview.
Make sure to contact your congressman for tickets and personal tour, you’ll have a great experience and if Congress is in session, you’ll have the opportunity to see the houses do their thing.

Nice walk along the side of the river looking at this memorial with lots of waterfalls, sculptures and powerful quotes inscribed on the stone walls.
I was surprise how big and detail this monuments was, it is a very nice walk and the path will take you to the Jefferson monument.

Downstairs there is a very small museum and gift shop The museum has a timeline that gives a nice general overview of some of the achievements and life events for Thomas Jefferson.
Worth the trip but take the $5 Uber for some parts of the monument sight-seeing We chose the Uber to and from Jefferson.

Cincinnati natives in town for a quick meeting - had a morning to explore and walked over to the Larz Anderson House Musuem and were welcomed and invited in for a free tour (have to take tour to visit entire house).

The chapel is beautiful, the catacombs fascinating (complete with reliquaries!!), the grounds are Instagram-able and the gift shop is a perfect place to shop for your uber-Catholic grandma.
Definitely do the free tour and when you have seen everything inside, then walk around the beautiful gardens where they have the stations of the cross, a replica of Mary's Tomb and other interesting things.
