Everything you need to know about the SFMTA's Muni and parking rules during coronavirus

The SFMTA is again pulling back on its local Muni transit service, effective this week.
As of Monday, Muni temporarily stopped running several usually busy rapid routes, the 5R, 9R, 28R and 38R (the 14R will run as normal). Other local lines — the 5-Fulton, the 9-San Bruno and the 38-Geary — will expand in order to service those routes as closely as possible. Then, beginning April 4, the 47-Van Ness no longer run on the weekends; the 49-Van Ness will be extended to run between North Point and Fisherman's Wharf.
SFMTA will also not be running any underground trains, instead replacing them with buses.
Changes extend to passenger rules as well; the SFMTA is extending deadlines for submitting citation requests, for citation hearing deadlines, and for completing active payment plans. It will also stop new penalties on citations.
For drivers with cars in the city, the SFMTA will extend its moratorium on parking enforcement related to street cleaning and street parking time limits. Specifically, those formerly ticketable offenses include:
- Exceeding the 72-hour parking limit
- Exceeding time limit parking (e.g., 1-hour, 2-hour, etc.)
- Not having valid Residential Permit Parking (RPP) permits
- Commuter shuttles parking improperly
- Violating peak-hour towaway zone rules
- Being parked in a street cleaning section
Other parking laws related to parking in the red and yellow zones, in white zones (while school is in session), near fire hydrants, or in bike or transit lanes will continue to be enforced.
Some city-run parking garages are closed (see full list here), but there's a reprieve for drivers: Base rates at parking meters across the city have been reduced through April 7. They'll now cost just $0.50 per hour for vehicles and $0.10 per hour for motorcycles.
