Other Programmes, Facilities and Secretariats hosted by WHO

There are other entities which are administratively hosted within WHO. They include United Nations Inter-Agency programmes (for example UNAIDS), inter-organizational facilities (United Nations International Computing Centre - UNICC), secretariats hosted in WHO pursuant to an international convention such as the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and WHO co-sponsored programmes (Special Programme on Research and Training in Tropical Diseases - TDR, Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction - HRP, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative - GPEI).

• Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS): the Joint Programme brings together the efforts and resources of ten UN system organizations to the global AIDS response. Cosponsors include UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WHO and the World Bank.
• United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC): the Centre is the leading provider of Information Technology and Communications (ICT) services within the United Nations System. The functions of ICC, as specified in its Mandate, are to provide information technology services, including both operational services and training.
• WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC): The Convention is an international treaty negotiated under the auspices of WHO. The Convention Secretariat is an entity hosted by the World Health Organization in Geneva and cooperates with relevant departments of WHO and other competent international organizations and bodies, and non-governmental organizations accredited as observers to the Conference of the Parties.
• Special Programme on Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR): TDR is a global programme of scientific collaboration that helps facilitate, support and influence efforts to combat diseases of poverty. It is hosted at the World Health Organization (WHO), and is sponsored by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and WHO.
• Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP): the UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme is the main instrument within the United Nations system for research in human reproduction, bringing together policy-makers, scientists, health care providers, clinicians, consumers and community representatives to identify and address priorities for research to improve sexual and reproductive health.
• Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI): The Initiative is a public-private partnership with the goal of completing the eradication and containment of all wild, vaccine-related and Sabin polioviruses, such that no child ever again suffers paralytic poliomyelitis. It is led by national governments with five partners – the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
