About Taylor & Francis Books Open Access

Taylor & Francis Books Open Access allows authors and their funders to publish open access (OA) single- or co-authored books, edited collections and individual chapters. Upon publication, Taylor & Francis Books Open Access titles are made available in digital format to read and download freely under a Creative Commons license.

Our Open Access books programme complements our well-established Open Access publishing programme for journals. It encompasses books in all subjects covered by Routledge in the humanities, social sciences and behavioural sciences as well as science, technology, engineering and medical titles published under our CRC Press imprint.

In establishing this programme, Taylor & Francis is responding to wider developments within the scholarly research community and to those scholars seeking innovative and alternative publishing models to the well-established and traditional formats. It is a service for our authors and those funders who wish to support open access publication.

Upon publication, your book will be freely and immediately available online on the Taylor & Francis eBooks platform and clearly identified as ‘open access’. Research suggests that Open Access content is far more likely to be downloaded and cited.  This study found that OA book chapters are downloaded 7 times more than non-OA titles, were cited 50% more and mentioned online 10 times more. 

Flexible Licensing & Author Retention of Copyright

A main feature of Open Access is you, as the author, still retain intellectual copyright of your work whichever license is agreed. Taylor & Francis Books Open Access titles are published under a Creative Commons license. Our preferred license is CC BY-NC-ND (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs). Under this license, others may download your work and share it as long as they credit you, but they can't change it in any way or use it commercially. The license also allows for text- and data-mining of your work.

We are committed to being flexible on the specifics of the Creative Commons license for your OA book and we are able to offer alternative license types based on funder and author needs. Contact your editor for more details.

Open Access by the Chapter

We offer two options for authors or contributors to make individual book chapters available open access. Whilst there are many different definitions of open access, these options correspond to what is normally referred to as ‘gold’ or ‘green’ open access. 

As with our full title OA program, we are committed to being flexible on the specifics of the Creative Commons license for your OA book. We can offer alternative license types based on funder and author needs so contact your editor if you would like more details.

Book Processing Charges (BPCs) 

Taylor & Francis Group and Knowledge Unlatched

Taylor & Francis are working with Knowledge Unlatched (KU) to make Open Access publishing accessible to all. Every year Taylor & Francis nominate a number of frontlist and backlist titles for inclusion in the KU Select programme. The KU Selection Committee, consisting of more than 150 librarians, form a collection containing the titles they deem most interesting for libraries and readers world-wide.

Taylor & Francis are also pleased to announce that they are collaborating with Knowledge Unlatched to publish 150 Routledge African Studies and 45 Routledge Gender Studies books Open Access between 2020 and 2022.
