Chart Beat - 1 January, 2018

My, oh my we have been feeling festive this week. Leading up to Christmas I would understand but the week after Christmas? Must be all the Boxing Day sales. Anyway, two new singles and three re-entries this week and they are all of a Christmas nature. Whilst Mariah Carey regains her 1994 peak for All I Want For Christmas Is You at #4 and Wham! shoot up 20 knotches to #11 with Last Christmas, Michael Bublé gains a new peak with the re-entry of It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas and Band Aid return with their 1985 number one Do They Know It's Christmas? at 15. The Pogues also return, for a sixth time, with their 1988 hit Fairytale Of New York at #22. It's the new entries that make you sit up and think. 73-year old Brenda Lee had nine hit singles in the Lever Hit Parade between 1960 and 1963, her biggest I'm Sorry and Dum Dum both spending a week each at the top. Her festive Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree from 1958 failed to chart; that is until now. That gives the track 59 years, 3 months to hit the charts. Surely that must be an all time record. She enters the chart at #25.
The other comes from John Lennon, Yoko Ono And The Harlem Community Choir. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) peaked at #14 in 1973 on the NZ Listener chart but has never charted on the current RIANZ Top 40. That makes it a first. Had Lennon been still alive he would have been 4 years older than Brenda Lee.
Whilst its Christmas that holds the theme on the singles chart, it's two soundtracks and a duet with the new entries on the album chart.
American rappers Travis Scott and Quavo team up for Huncho Jack And Jack Huncho at #22. The pair claimed in September they "have have over 20 records ready". Thirteen of them appear on this disc.
The soundtrack to The Greatest Showman debuts at #36. The American period musical stars Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron and is the ninth biggest movie in New Zealand this week.
The other soundtrack is Bright. Starring Will Smith, the American urban fantasy action crime flick places the soundtrack new at #40.

Chart Beat - 8 January, 2018

The chart corrects itself this week after last weeks flood of Christmas entries.
With all the artists on this weeks new singles, including the collaborators, there are a total of 52 different artists in the Top 40 singles. Seems the day of one artist doing it solo are very limited with the current trend to link up with multiple artists to complete a hit single.
The second single from an album still to be announced gives David Guetta his 23rd Top 40 single. On this one he teams up with Dutchman Afrojack for Dirty Sexy Money, new at #34.
Machine Gun Kelly, X Ambassadors and Bebe Rexha have the other new single. Home debuts at #38.
And that's it. There are no new albums this week, but that's typical for this time of the year. The biggest mover in the chart is the soundtrack to The Greatest Showman which jumps 30 knotches to #6. Ed Sheeran, who achieved all three of his albums (+, x and ÷) inside the annual UK Top 20 last year remains at the top in Godzone with ÷ going onto it's 27th week. And there are 6 re-entries.

Chart Beat - 15 January 2018

Ahead of his NZ shows, Bruno Mars teams up with Cardi B for a remix of Finesse at #9 from his 24K Magic album. It's the fouth hit from the album and 16th overall. He will be in New Zealand next month.
A$AP Ferg may be new to the singles chart but he has charted two albums. Born Darold Ferguson, Jr. he is a a member of A$AP Mob and makes his debut at #38 with Plain Jane.
Cheat Codes have the third and final new single at #40. Feels Great is the trio's third hit single.
Canadian Bryan Adams was on tour in Godzone this week however the Mt Maunganui gig was pushed back two days due to bad weather. That didn't stop his compile Ultimate from debuting at #21. The rocker has released 13 studio albums since 1980 with 18 hit singles in New Zealand.
One more new album enters the Top 40 and its the third soundtrack of the year. Pitch Perfect 3 is currently the fourth biggest movie in the land and takes the soundtrack to a #22 debut. For the record the previous two soundtracks saw Pitch Perfect 1 peak at #14 and Pitch Perfect 2 at #8.

Chart Beat - 22 January, 2018

Cuban-American Camila Cabello has the highest new single and album this week. Camila, debuts at #3, whilst second single Never Be The Same follows the success of Havana which peaked at #2 and is new at #15.
Next comes South African born Troye Sivan. He says My, My My! is a song of liberation, freedom, and love. It enters the chart at #25.
One knotch down is a duet from Kendrick Lamar and SZA. All The Stars comes from the soundtrack Black Panther.
Speaking of soundtracks, the first hit single from The Greatest Showman makes it to the singles chart. This Is Me from Keala Settle and the Greatest Showman Ensemble is the American actresses first time in the chart. It debuts at #34.
Dua Lipa rounds up a busy singles chart with this weeks fifth new entry. IDGAF , new at #38, stands for I Don't Give A ...erm...well I think you guessed it.
Originally from Christchurch, Salmonella Dub have been quiet since 2010 with no albums in the charts since 2009. Now with Tiki Taane back in the line-up, the lads are back on tour and with a new album. Commercial Grates is a compilation celebrating 25 years together with a generous 30 tracks. It enters the chart at #37.
We have already lost two more prolifoc artists this year. Englishman Ray Thomas was a founding member of The Moody Blues from 1965 until his death. As writer, vocalist and a multi-instrumentalist he made a huge contribution with songs In Search of the Lost Chord and Lazy Day and played a bit part on flute for the bands most well known hit Nights In White Satin. He even contributed backing vocals to the song "I Am the Walrus" by The Beatles He passed away on 4 January aged 76.
This past week saw Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries die too. As lead singer, the band enjoyed three NZ Top 10 singles in Zombie, Linger and Ode To My Family. She was only 46. A compile from 2002 is back in the charts at #13.

Chart Beat - 29 January, 2018

Ed Sheeran has the double again this week but his biggest achievement is taking the album ÷ on to 30 weeks at the top. Only one other album in the history of the chart has reached the 30 and she was also a Brit. In 2012 Adele took her second album 21 to 30 weeks at the top ending with a historic and record breaking 38 total weeks at number one. With Sheeran touring here in March, there is a good chance he could take that record from her. With his current success, I'm really surprise his first album + is not charting, especially when second album x is still in the Top 20 and sitting on 188 weeks. For the record the most weeks ever charted by an album is Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd with 297 weeks. Next comes Adele with 21 sitting on 237 weeks, then it's Sheeran with two albums, + on 194 and x on 188 weeks.
Only one new album enters this weeks Top 40.
Also playing here in March, Chicago's Fall Out Boy with their fourth Top 10 in abum MANIA at #6. The album was originally due out in September but wasn't ready. It's their seventh album since 2003.
Canadian Drake has the highest new single. God's Plan is taken from the new EP Scary Hours which, to date, only has two songs on it. He says the full EP will be out shortly, He enters the chart at #7.
Zac Efron and Zendaya join forces for the other new single.. Rewrite The Stars , new at #35, is taken from the soundtrack The Greatest Showman and the second to chart from the movie. It's Efron's first hit single and Zendaya's second.

Chart Beat - 5 February, 2018

After a big start last week, Drake jumps seven knotches to push Ed Sheeran off the top with the years first new number one single. It's his second chart topper after One Dance spent 13 weeks there in 2016.
Englands drum and bass band Rudimental gain there 7th Top 20 single in These Days at #16. It continues the current trend in multiple collaborating artists with Jess Glynn, Macklemore and Dan Caplen all doing there bit.
The Chainsmokers don't need any help, however, as they place their 8th single at #36. Sick Boy is a tease from a rumoured second album.
Wellingtonians Tomorrow People surprise with their first number one as fourth hit album BBQ Reggae enters at the top. To date their first album One was their biggest, peaking at #3. Second album Bass And Bassinettes peaked at #7 in 2015 but since then there have been just a handful of hits on the NZ Singles Chart. Sadly to date they have still to list a Top 40 single.
American hip hop trio Migos took Culture to #20 last year, now the follow Culture II has a #5 entry. This one has a huge 24 tracks, clocking in at over 106 minutes.

The last three weeks has seen the Top 13 on the NZ Singles chart stay exactly the same. It's tough going if your a kiwi artist right now with the lack of kiwi singles in the Top 40 for the last two years. To my mind it shows something is wrong. There is no lack of talent out there either. I'm not sure what needs to happen but I'm hoping this year we will see the return of local artists making it in our charts. At this stage though that looks highly unlikely. By comparison, there are currently seven locals in the Aussie Top 50. That's seven locals, not singles. Over here we have two artists, and only four for the entire 2017 chart year, (Kings, Lorde, Six60 and DRAX Project). Come on kiwis, fly!

Chart Beat - 12 February 2018

Ed Sheeran now has two hits in the Top 4 longevity list as last years number one moves onto 57 weeks in the chart. In 2014 Thinking Out Loud made it to 59 weeks, and it is highly likely Shape Of You will overtake it. Incidentally, he also has two albums in the top 4 longevity list. In both cases he holds the #3 and #4 slot. Now there's an interesting statistic for a pub quiz. Here is that list:

Three new singles enter this weeks Top 40.
20-year old Andrew Bazzi opens his account with Mine at #20. The Detroit resident was only four years old when he first started playing guitar.
Staying in America, hip hop trio Migos follows up their #17 hit Bad And Boujee with their second at #35. Stir Fry is taken from last weeks new album Culture II.
The third new single comes from Justin Timberlake. Say Something is his 17th NZ Top 40 single. His sixth hit album which contains the song, is this weeks highest new album. Debuting at #3, Man Of The Woods is his first recorded work since the movie Trolls.
Before we look at this weeks new albums, a statistic from the past. What is the biggest drop from the number one spot? At the end of 2014 Michael Bublé broke his own record of a 36 knotch drop (which he took from Susan Boyle with her album I Dreamed A Dream) by dropping out altogether with Christmas. This week his record is matched as locals Tomorrow People leave the chart after just one week in the top 40, making it the shortest lived number one in the history of the chart.
Three newcomers round off this weeks four new albums.
Wellington's Scorn Of Creation are new at #18 with their self-titled disc. The death metal four piece have a special limited edition vinyl textured CD available at their shows to promote the album.
Born Brian Imanuel , 18 year old Indonesia hip hopper Rich Brian comes in with Amen at #30.
Finally former Aucklander Paul Bosauder debuts at #37 with Tierra y Mar. The flamenco guitarist had the guts to launch his musical style in a pub. He certainly impressed his audience and now has an album to prove it.

Chart Beat - 19 February, 2018

This weeks highest new single comes from the soundtrack to the movie Black Panther. The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar team up for Pray For Me at #16. It's the second collaboration the pair have done; the first was Sidewalks from the album Starboy which peaked at #2 in the Heatseeker Singles Chart in 2016. The soundtrack itself, which is the latest Marvel Comics superhero flick, debuts at #2 making it two sountracks in the Top 2. So, has there ever been two sountracks at the top, and if so, when was the last time. Well, yes, back in 2016. On 26 September the Top 2 consisted of two sountracks: Suicide Squad and Poi E.
Russian-German record producer Zedd, American singer Maren Morris and American musical duo Grey team up for the final new single at #28. The Middle is described by Morris as "a little bit country, little pop, little R&B;, relatable, emotional and catchy as hell."
It's been a big year for soundtracks. Along with this weeks #2 new entry Black Panther, the third installment of thr Fifty Shades trilogy Freed enters the chart at #10. The other two peaked inside the Top 4. It's the sixth new soundtrack to enter the chart in 8 weeks.
Onehunga hip hop collective SWIDT place their third album entry in the Top 40 at #31. The Bootleg EP is new at #31.
Over on the NZ Singles Chart the top 10 remains static for a sixth week, whilst Six60 hold onto the Top 2 NZ Albums.

Lyttelton resident Marlon Williams comes in at #1 out of the blocks with his first chart topper. His last appearance in the chart took him to #7 with an 86 week stay in the NZ Albums chart. He well and truly proves this week that was no one-hit wonder. His first appearance in the chart was a duet he did with Dalaney Donald in 2014.
American electronics star Marshmello and English singer Anne Marie team up for this weeks highest new single. Friends has been a popular choice for a song title over the years. Justin Bieber and BloodPop® had a hit with it last year, as did Jody Watley in 1989, Elton John in 1971, and Bruce Woodley also in 1971. This one, though, was written by Marshmello, Anne-Marie and Natalie Dunn. It comes in at #27.
Continuing the duet theme, Khalid and Normani score a new entry with Love Lies at #29. Taken from the movie Love, Simon, it is Khalid's third hit and Normani's first solo hit. She is best known as a member of girl group Fifth Harmony.
Newcomer BlocBoy JB has the third and final new single. The Memphis, Tennessee rapper places Look Alive in at #36.
We may have only one new album in the chart this week but a re-entry from Queen proves an album can still be popular. decades after release. On the strength of a documentary during the week, Greatest Hits from 1981 is back at #27 in it's 110th week. The last time it charted was in 2014.

Chart Beat - 5 March, 2018

Ed Sheeran continues to achieve milestones. This week his singleShape Of You makes it to 60 weeks. There have only ever been two other songs go that far. Happy by Pharrell Williams stopped at 62 weeks 1in 2015 whilst the top spot goes to New Order with Blue Monday stacking up 74 weeks in 1985.
Two new singles and two new albums join the ranks this week.
Post Malone attempts to knock Drake off the top with his new single Psycho entering the chart at #2. It's a personal best for the American rapper as his highest debut. Should he go to the top it will be his third number one in four months. Pycho is taken from his yet to ne released second album Beerbongs & Bentleys.
In 2015 The Weeknd reached #7 with Earned It; the first single from the Fifty Shades trilogy. In2016 it was Zayn and Taylor Swift's turn reaching #4 with I Don't Wanna Live Forever. Now Liam Payne and Rita Ora give it a go with For You from the third and final movie. The duet is new at #34.
Brooklyn native 6ix9ine is the latest rapper to join the New Zealand albums chart. Born Daniel Hernandez, the 21 year old places his debut album Day69 at #15. Watch out for lead single Gummo.
Vance Joy could only manage a #40 peak when he first entered our chart in 2014. Now the Australian singer songwriter is back with album number two. Appropriately titled Nation Of Two he enters the chart at #20.
Finally, a trip downunder for Bruno Mars last week places him firmly in the Albums chart this week with Doo-Wops And Hooligans and Unorthodox Jukebox making an apearance in the lower half of the chart.

Chart Beat - 12 March, 2018

Rapper Xxxtentacion (aka Dwayne Onfroy) is back with his second single Sad! at #19. Scoring the only new single this week, this one comes from his upcoming album ? . His first single Jocelyn Flores peaked at #12 last year.
Two newcomers have this weeks two new albums in another lean chart week.
South Korean rapper j-hope opens his account at #23 with Hope World. He made his debut as a member of the South Korean boy band BTS who have enjoyed two Top 30 albums here. As one of the main songwriters for the group, he has over 50 songs credited to his name. This is his debut solo mixtape.
Canadian rapper Tory Lanez makes his entrance to the NZ charts at #31 with Memories Don't Die. Born Daystar Peterson, this is his sophomore album which follows his 2016 debut which only managed a #4 peak in the Album Heatseeker chart.
A compile containing sixteen 80's hits enters the compilation chart this week. Eat Up The 80's is new at #8.

Chart Beat - 19 March, 2018

American rapper Logic and music producer Marshmello team up for this weeks only new single. Everyday, new at #37, is still on the rise globally with Hungary listing the highest peak for the song at #35. Logic also scores the highest new album. Bobby Tarantino II is his sixth mixtape and fourth album entry in just over three years..
It may be quiet in the singles chart but the album chart is the opposite with 8 new entries.
Lil Boat 2 is the second long player from American rapper Lil Yachty. New at #23, the disc is 17 tracks over 45 minutes, most around two minute s in length.
Remember Calum Scott? He made it to #5 with the single Dancing On My Own in 2016. Well the Britain's Got Talent winner now has an album. Only Human is new at #26.
British a cappella vocal ensemble The King's Singers founded in 1968. Despite a truck load of albums, they have never charted here. Three-CD compile Gold is new at #28 and, along with a New Zealand tour, they are celebrating a 50 year career.
English metallers Judas Priest now have a staggering 18 studio albums. Their latest , Firepower, is the fifth in our charts and new at #36.
Sydney sextet Ocean Alley are currently on tour to support their second album. The reggae newcomers list Chiaroscuro at #38.
Jimi Hendrix may have passed away in 1970 but his albums keep coming. Both Sides Of The Sky boasts 13 studio recordings made between 1968 and 1970; ten of which have never before been released.  The disc enters the chart at #39.
Finally comes Cecile McLorin Salvant. The winner of the first prize in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2010 lists Dreams And Daggers at #40. It's her fourth album but first to chart here.
An album of rock n roll classics from the late 50's and early 60's becomes the first new number one of the year on the compilations chart. Beach Hop Magic knocks Now 55 off the top after 18 straight weeks.

It's been a very lean year for new entries in the two Top 40 charts. The first quarter figures are due next week but so far both charts are down on last year. To date we have 28 new singles in 2018. That compares to 42 last year which was up due to the influx of Ed Sheeran tracks. The album chart this year has received 30 new albums which compares eqlally to last year due to this weeks 8 new entries. I'll have a full rundown next week.

Chart Beat - 26 March, 2018

David Burd (aka Lil Dicky) from America has this weeks highest new single. He was discovered through the music video to Ex-Boyfriend, which went viral on You Tube. Freaky Friday ropes in Chris Brown on vocals and debuts at #10.
Xxxtentacion has two new singles in this weeks Top 40. Moonlight (new at #30) and Changes (the shortest song to chart this year at 2:02, new at #33) are both taken from his new album ?, which just so happens to be the highest new album, in at #2.
On the week before Ed Sheeran tours Godzone, his first album+ re-enters the chart at #37 in it's 195th week whilst X reaches 196 weeks and ÷ turns 55 weeks along with single Shape Of You which makes it the second most weeks ever to chart in the singles chart at 63 weeks. The next few weeks will be interesting.
Now based in London, Waitakere band I Am Giant place their third album Life In Captivity in at #26. Lead single Dead Flower peaked at #2 on the NZ Heatseeker singles chart last year.
A number of first time acts enter the chart post Womad 2018.
Swedish/Icelandic female duo My Bubba open their account at #30 with the album Big Bad Good. They have been recording since 2010 with five albums and an EP to their résumé.
The daughter to Ravi Shankar who made a name for himself through promotion from George Harrison is also new to out charts. Anoushka Shankar is a British Indian sitar player and composer. Land Of Gold is her 8th album but first here.
Keeping the newbie theme, Mista Savona (born Jake Dominic Savona) from Melbourne places his first hit (and seventh long player) Havana Meets Kingston new at #36.
To cap it all off, Womad 2018 debuts at #3 on the compilation chart along with another radio promotion CD.

Although we've had four kiwi songs in the Top 40 in 2018 there have been no new entry local tracks since mid December. This compares to 3 last year and none in 2016. How we fix that I have no idea.

Chart Beat - 2 April, 2018

It's been hard to get away from Ed Sheeran mania this week as he performs six shows in New Zealand. He is clocking up some very interesting statistics too:
30 hit singles.
28 weeks at #1 on the singles chart.
3 singles charting over 40 weeks, two of them inside the Top 4 longevity list.
479 weeks in the singles chart, that puts him in fifth place.
6 weeks away from having the album with the most weeks at #1
48 weeks at #1 on the albums chart; that puts him in second place.
448 weeks in the Albums chart.
2 albums literally weeks away from 200 weeks. There have only been 2 so far to achieve that.
I think you get the idea. Anyway, this week he has three single re-entries and holds the Top 2 albums, with a third leaping up 25 knotches to #12.
In other news (lol) there are two new singles and six new albums this week.
Canadian Shawn Mendes lists single number six at #13. In My Blood is the lead single from his third, as yet unnamed, third album. He claims it is "the closest song to my heart that I've ever written".
N.E.R.D. and Rihanna topped the Heatseeker singles chart in November but it takes a remix from Drake to get it into the Top 40. Lemon enters at #37.
Englishman George Ezra gains his second hit album at #8. The highest debut for the week follows from the 2014 album Wanted On Voyage which peaked at #4 and spent 61 weeks in the chart.
After a brave documentary around Stan Walker's cancer scare, his first new recordings since the operation which removed his stomach puts the EP Stan firmly in for a #17 entry. We havn't seen the last of this man.
Jack White is back with album number three post White Stripes. Boarding House Reach, new at #25, was recorded on a reel-to-reel tape recorder which he purchased when he was fourteen. Hi last, Lazaretto, had an interesting vinyl edition which had two hidden tracks which played at 78rpm and 45rpm and oneside played from the centre out.
American DJ Diplo places his first solo entry in at #27. The California EP follows from a duet he did with Skrillex in 2015.
The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber needs no introduction. To date there have been three compilations of his work, from 1989, 1993 and 1996. A new updated one enters the chart at #36.
Finally DRAX Project slot in at #40 with the Covers (Live) EP. After 14 weeks at #2 they go to the top of the NZ Singles chart with Woke Up Late.

Chart Beat - 9 April, 2018

Four new singles and three new albums but only three new artists across the two main charts.
The week belongs to Abel Tesfaye. Known better as The Weeknd, the Ethiopian-Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer lists his new EP My Dear Melancholy, at #2 with three of the six tracks (Call Out My Name (#10), Try Me (#35)( and Wasted Times (#36)) entering the Singles chart. That now makes it 12 singles and 3 album entries since November 2014.
Rich The Kid has the other new single and a new album. Born Dimitri Roger, the American rapper and singer places his first single, Plug Walk at #32 and his first album, The World Is Yours at #20.
Finally, American singer-songwriter, actress, and dancer Hayley Kiyoko lists her debut album Expectations at #25. Watch out for lead single What I Need.

Chart Beat - 16 April. 2018

Built on the seccess of God's Plan, Canadian rapper Drake scores the highest new single of the week with Nice For What. The first track from his next album which he has just finished, it debuts at #5.
Newcomer Robinson gains the first new kiwi single of the year with Nothing To Regret at #34. The 21 year old whose first name is Sharon was born in Greymouth and attended high school in Nelson.
Taylor Swift has the final new single. Delicate is the fifth hit single from her album reputation and debuts at #35.
Its a busy album chart with nine newbies.
American rapper Cardi B first came on the scene last year with single Bodak Yellow which peaked at #24. Her debut album Invasion Of Privacy enters this weeks chart at #3 to become the highest new entry of the week.
Elton John holds the #6 and #7 spots ...well kinda. In 1991 a tribute album called Two Rooms was released. Chart rules were different back then. That's why it peaked at #2 on the compilations chart. This week a second tribute album, Revamp: The Songs Of Elton John And Bernie Taupin comes in at #7 just behind his current Diamonds compilation. The artists included were hand picked by the artist as part of his 50+ years celebrating his career. Revamp is one part of a two album set, the other called Restoration: Reimagining the Songs ...which debuts at #9 on the Heatseeker album chart.
Psychedelic rock locals Unknown Mortal Orchestra are back with album #3. Sex And Food is new at #9 and is their highest entry yet.
Gin Wigmore is another local with a new album Ivory is the Aucklanders fourth album.
Aussie producer and DJ Alison Wonderland is back taking Awake tp #14, two knotches down from the peak of her last album.
The 14th studio album from Kylie Minogue enters the chart at #16. Golden saw a large portion of the album recored in Nashville Tennesee and is heavily influenced by country and dance music.
Hillsong continue to pump them out with There Is More at #18. It's the churches 24th charting disc of worship songs since 2002.
Further down the chart are American Hip Hoppers Flatbush Zombies. Vacation In Hell is their second hit and follow up to 2014's 3001: A Laced Odyssey which peaked at #27.
Thirty Seconds To Mars round off a busy week with America at #36. The cover is unique featuring multiple variations with an array of lists of words that reflect the themes of the album allowing the fan to create their own cover.

Chart Beat - 23 April, 2018

It's week 17 and there are still 12 singles charting in the Top 40 that debuted last year. Six of those hits have charted over 30 weeks. That just shows how stable to Singles Chart is at the mo.
American rapper Cardi B, Puerto Rican Bad Bunny and Colombian J Balvin join forces for this weeks highest new single I Like It at #15. As the nations suggest, its a real international effort with Bad Bunny rapping part of the song in English, while Balvin sings Hispanic Caribbean slang. It contains a sample from I Like It Like That, by Pete Rodriguez from 1967. Cardi B also scores a new entry at #39 with Be Careful.
The third single from trio Migos is new at #36. Walk It Talk It has peaked at #10 in America and #14 in Canada.
Former One Direction member ZAYN has the final of four newbies with Let Me at #40.
Ed Sheeran makes it to 200 weeks with his second album. The significance of this is X is only the third album in the 43 year history of the chart, and all three artists are Brits. Adele is in second place with 21 at 237 weeks whilst Pink Floyd top the list with Dark Side Of The Moon on 297 weeks. One more thing. Sheeran does the whole thing conecutively as Adele left the chart after 161 weeks and Floyd after 139 weeks. Its not over yet. He is only seven weeks away from matching the 74 week record set by New Order with their song Blue Monday. He has already overtaken them for most consecutive weeks with Shape Of You now on 67 weeks, four more than New Order did before Blue Monday left the chart. He is also only 2 weeks away from matching the record for most weeks at #1 with an album.
Five new albums enter the Top 40 with Foster And Allen coming first. Timeless is the 23rd hit album from the Irish duo of Mick Foster and Tony Allen and comes with another tour of New Zealand. They are new at #11.
American male Andrew Bazzi took single Mine to #9 this week but his debut album Cosmic makes an entry at #18.
Palmerston North quintet Depths peaked at #24 with The Mortal Compass in 2015; this week their second Endless improves that high tide marks with a #19 debut.
American rockers Breaking Benjamin are back with hit album #5. Ember new at #24, climbed to the #1 spot on the American iTunes chart only 12 hours after its release.
A Capella group Pentatonix present their sixth studio album PTX Presents: Top Pop Vol. 1 at #30. It is also their first full-length album not to feature any original material, covering recent hits from the likes of Bruno Mars and Dua Lipa.
Finally comes an unexpected re-entry. TrinityRoots from Wellington took TRUE to #28 in 2002. Now re-issued and redesigned, the album is back with a new peak at #13.

Chart Beat - 30 April 2018

Eight new singles this week with half of them coming from J. Cole. The American has four Top 40 albums but until today, nothing in the singles chart. KOD, (#10) ATM,(#20) Photograph (#26) and Kevin's Heart (#28). No prizes for guessing then that his latest album KOD debuts at #1.
The 12th hit single from Ariana Grande dives into the Top 4. No Tears Left To Cry is the lead single from her next album which still has not been announced. It's her first new release since the Manchester bombing and, as she says, hopes will bring "light and Comfort".
Newcomer Dennis Lloyd opens his account at #35 with Nevermind. Born Nir Tibori in Tel Aviv, the 23 year old is reportedly a marketing genious with sales to his concerts selling out in an hour. Not bad for a newcomer.
Sons Of Zion have spent 6 weeks in the NZ Singles Chart with their latest but despite a truck load of singles, only once before been in the Top 40. Drift Away is new at #39 and the second new single from a local this year to grace the Top 40.
Californian Kyle follows his debut single iSpy with a second. PlayinWitMe is new at #40
American rockers A Perfect Circle haven't charted here since 2004 but they are finally back with Eat The Elephant at #3. The album began its life in 2008 but writer and frontman Maynard Keenan and guitarist Billy Howerdel, held the album up due to other projects and disagreements over the albums direction.
Kimbra is back with her third long player. Primal Heart, new at #12, was originally scehduled for release in January.
Finally, after successful NZ concerts in the past week, Las Vegas locals The Killers return with two albums, Wonderful Wonderful from 2017 at #26 and Hot Fuss from 2005 at #33.

She is a New Zealand Singer Songwriter and has some real good protest songs as covers as well.

Concerts in Godzone continue to spike sales. This week it was Post Malone, which gives him two new singles, Better Now (#6) and Paranoid (#7) with four other singles inside the Top 30 and his new album Beerbongs And Bentleys diving in at the top. Strangely, though, REM also sold well this week with several songs on the iTunes chart, yet no entries in this weeks Official Top 40.
Americans Khalid, Ty Dolla $ign and 6LACK join forces for OTW at #28. OTW stands for On The Way and is a ballad with 90's influences.
It's been nearly three years since Aussies 5 Seconds Of Summer were in the charts. Now with a new album out next month, Youngblood, the title track, is new at #35.
American Janelle Monáe peaked at #24 in 2013 but she improves on that with Dirty Computer new at #14. It's considered a concept album and, as she puts it, an attempt to "step into a more authentic self".
Whanganui resident Darren Watson also improves on his high tide mark with Too Many Millionaires at #20. His previous disc Introducing Darren Watson only made it to #26. He was previosly with Chicago Smoke Shop who peaked at #46 in 1989 with their self titled album.
England's Anne-Marie is making big waves in her homeland but to date over here she has only enjoyed success here in a supporting role. This week though she gains her first hit with the album Speak Your Mind at #31.
Graffiti U is the new album from New Zealand Australian country music singer Keith Urban. Debuting at #32, its his fourth NZ hit album.
Over on the compilation chart there are three new entries, another radio promotion from Coast, the latested offering from Ministry Of Sound and the 56th installment of Now That's What I Call Music. In the UK where the franchize was created in 1983, they have just released volume 99. The 100th is touted to be a big celebration with a book on the history of the successful series also on the way.

Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover Jr.) has this weeks highest new single with a title that was once used by David Bowie. Bowie took This Is Not America to #12 in 1985, however this is not a remake. Slotting in at #11 This Is America improves on his last single by 11 knotches. This is the American's second.
Post Malone continues to impress, this week with two more new singles. Stay (#20 and not a remake) and Rich And Sad (#26) take his total to 8 hit singles this week alone.
Newcomer Billie Eilish is at #36 with Lovely. The American has been releasing music since 2015 but this is her first successful single anywhere.
Norwegian DJ Kygo is back with his fifth hit single. Remind Me To Forget, new at #39, is the third single from his second studio album, Kids in Love.
Finally Shawn Mendes slots in his seventh hit with Youth at #40.
The Ten Tenors have been hanging around the Heatseekers chart but this week make the leap with Wish You Were Here new at #9. The Australian music ensemble formed in 1997 and are currently on tour of NZ.
American gospel and soul singer Leon Bridges took his first long player to #13 with Coming Home in 2015. That's exactly where he lands his second album Good Thing.
Aucland's Hopetoun Brown have also been bubbling just under the Top 40 with their third disc. Don't Let Them Lock You Up, new at #29. The band includes founding Supergroove members Nick Atkinson and Tim Stewart in the line up.
Parkway Drive are back with a fourth hit. Reverence is the Australian metalcore bands sixth studio album.
Finally, another American hip hop collaboration enters the chart at #40. Rae Sremmurd, Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi are new with new with SR3MM. This album is an exhaustive101 minues across three discs.

Following overseas trends, Childish Gambino jumps 11 knotches to take on this weeks number one single with This Is Not America.
There is only one new entry this week in the singles pile. Twenty five year old Selena Gomez scores her 13th hit single with Back To You at #35. The track is taken from the TV Series 13 Reasons Why,
England's Arctic Monkeys narrowly miss out on their second number one with Tranquility Base Hotel And Casino entering at #2. In 2013 their biggest album AM topped the chart and spent 61 weeks in the chart. Principal writer Alex Turner wrote all the songs but was uninterested in the suggestion he make them into a solo album.
The sophomore album from Amercan Charlie Puth is new at #6. Voicenotes was produced by Puth and was originally scehduled for release a few months ago. It was delayed to perfect it including a new album cover.
Sons Of Zion are on a roll. This week single Drift Away jumps 15 knotches to #20 whilst album Vantage Point debuts at #18. This is their second album; Universal Love peaking at #3 in 2013.
Newcomer Playboi Carti (aka Jordan Carter) comes from Atlanta Georgia. The hip hopper scores his first chart entry globally with Die Lit debuting at #27 this week. He is signed to A$AP Mob's AWGE record label.
Finally Julia Deans lists her second at #29. We Light Fire follows from the #12 peak of Modern Fables from 2010. She has also been in the album chart twice as a member of fur Patrol.
Finally it is with sadness we mark the loss of Carl Perkins. The former Herbs and House Of Shem artist began as a percussionist and writer then bocoming a guitarist. He even had a stint with The Wailers after Bob Marley died. He was only 59 and passed away on 10 May.

The first NZ charting solo single from Brit Anne-Marie breaks the ice at #23. 2002 is her 18th single, five of which have charted in the UK Top 40.
South Korean boy band BTS list their first NZ Top 40 single with Fake Love at #35. In their homeland they have had five #1 albums, four #1 EP's and two number one singles since 2013. This track is taken from the album Love Yourself / 'Tear' which debuts at #5.
The third offering from Australian Courtney Barnett is new at #10. Tell Me How You Really Feel was recorded in Melbourne and boasts the lead single Nameless, Faceless which was released back in February. The album marks the highest she has been in our charts.
American metallers Five Finger Death Punch also raise the bar with And Justice For None at #12. Their last two chart entries, Got Your Six from 2015 and The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell from 2013 peaked inside the Top 30.
Englishman James Bay is back with Electric Light new at #21. This disc is a mix of different styles and reportedly totally different from his last.
Finally Aucklanders Wax Chattels open their account at #37 with their self titled disc.
The fourth single in the NZ Singles Top 20 from Mitch James enters at #5 this week. Whilst he has yet to scratch the Singles chart, 21 looks like it could be his first given the high entry.

Chart Beat - 4 June, 2018

Once upon a time it was common for a song to be written by two people: Jagger / Richards; Bacharach/David; Lennon/McCartney; John/Taupin. In the UK the average number of people to write a song has now risen to 4.84 with the most writers being 15 for Liam Payne's Strip That Down. It's becoming a headache for publishers who have to split royalties. In New Zealand it's pretty much the same. A look at this weeks three new singles sees 9 different writers.
A$AP Rocky top the bill with eight of them. The American has just released his third album. Two of the 15 tracks enter this weeks singles chart Praise The Lord (Da Shine), new at #23 and A$AP Forever at #35 take the member of A$AP Mob on to three solo hit singles. The album is also new, at #4.
Juice WRLD (aka Jared Higgins) opens his account at #26 with Lucid Dreams (Forget Me). The Chicago rapper released the song back in July but 2.5 million YouTube views has earned him a hit single. His debut album Goodbye And Good Riddance is new at #17.
Canadian Shawn Mendes is back with his third full length album at #2 making this the highest new entry of the week. The 19 year old was inspired by Justin Timberlake, Kings of Leon, and Kanye West for this self titled album.
Another American rapper, Pusha T, opens his account at #12 with his album Daytona.
Born Terrence Thornton way back in 1977 makes him quite possibly the oldest rapper to launch his first album on our charts. For the record he is 44.
Finally Scottish synth trio CHVRCHES launch third album Love Is Dead which debuts at #35. The band collaborated with David Stewart from Eurythmics and Matt Berninger from The National during production.
Over on the compilations chart comes a kiwi collection of garage rock called Wild Things LP: Social End Products Of The World Unite!. Originally, Wild Things was released in 1992 but failed to chart. This copy, available on vinyl like the original, boasts a different track listing and debuts at #7. Artists include The La De Da's, Sandy Edmonds, The Pleazers and Chants R&B; amongst many others.

Chart Beat - 11 June, 2018

Last week I mentioned the average number of writers per song in the Top 40 has risen. I've also noticed the song length has dropped too. In 1978, 40 years ago, the average length for a new entry single in the chart was 3:39. Ten years later in 1988 that had risen to 4:00 and up to 4:10 in 1998. In 2008 that was similar at 4:02 but so far this year that number is down to 3:28. There's two statistics to show how much the music industry has changed in the past ten years.
5 Seconds Of Summer gain their third number one single with Youngblood which is topping the charts worldwide.
Maroon 5 score their 22nd Top 40 single in style, with a #9 debut. Girls Like You is the second hit from their current album Red Pill Blues and took six people to write following on from the current trend. This track features vocals from Cardi B.
Newcomer Noah Kahan joins Julia Michaels for Hurt Somebody new at #29. 21-year old Kahan released his first single, Young Blood, in January 2017. His EP of the same name from earlier on this year carries an updated version with Michaels making it a duet.
Kanye West enters the penthouse suite this week with his second number one album. His previous, The Life Of Pablo, failed to chart here despite topping the US charts. ye is his eighth studio album and follows controversy surrounding his political views, causing him to redo all the work on the album which he did in just two weeks. The album is more like an EP as the full length is just over 23 minutes. Four of the seven tracks also enter the Singles chart.
It's a great week for new kiwi albums.
Hailing from Waipu comes three-piece thrash metal band Alien Weaponry with their debut album. In 2016 the band won both the national finals of Smokefreerockquest and Smokefree Pacifica Beats - the only band to have ever won both events. Tū may be the debut album but it follows an EP The Zego Sessions from 2014.
Auklander Tami Neilson lists album #3 at #6. Sassafrass! is actually her 6th full length album.
Katchafire are next with fifth studio album Legacy at #8, then its Julian Temple Band at #11 with Antarctica.
At the bottom of the chart comes Ben Howard. Coming in at #38 with Noonday Dream, this is his second hit album.
One small footnote: Hysteria, the #1 album from Def Leppard receives the 30th Anniversary Edition treatment and re-enters the chart at #31.

Chart Beat - 18 June, 2018

American Micheal Stevenson (billed as Tyga which stands for Thank you God always) has this weeks highest new single, at #20. Releasing albums since 2008, Taste is his first Top 40 single in NZ.
The fifth hit single from Brits Clean Bandit is new at #37. Solo has already hit the Top 5 in Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Norway, Slovakia, and Sweden.
It's been a huge year fpr Drake with two number ones totalling 13 weeks at the top. Third single this year, I'm Upset, has been hanging around the Heatseeker charts for a couple of weeks and debuts at #38.
American hip hop self-billed supergroup Kids See Ghosts (can you really call two people a supergroup??) rocket to #3 on entry with their self titled long player. Consisting of Kanye West and Kid Cudi it continues a friendship that goes back years when Cudi signed to West's G.O.O.D. label. Like West's new album from last week, this one only lasts 23 minutes.
The second EP this year from Wellington quartet DRAX Project comes in at #10. Noon marks the highest they have been in the Albums chart.
Brit newcomer Jorja Smith has worked with Drake and Stormzy but now has an album of her own. Lost And Found, new at #16, boasts her first single Blue Lights which originally came out in 2016.
Lily Allen launches her first album in four years at #40. No Shame is her fourth studio album.
Fifthy years ago the chart was scattered with some of New Zealand's biggest all time hit makers. The then New Zealand hit Parade which was published in the NZ Listener produced 21 kiwi singles in the chart in 1968, three of them topping the charts, and in September / October half of the Top 10 was local. On October 4 Allison Durbin, The Avengers and The Fourmyula held the top 3, a far cry from todays chart. Larry's Rebels, The Simple Image, Mr. Lee Grant, Ray Columbus, and John Rowles were just a few of the artists to make it big. The year is celebrated this week in a new compilation entering the compilation chart. The Kiwi Music Scene 1968 is new at #8 and covers an amazing 58 tracks. It follows on from previous CD's which covered 1966 and 1967.

Chart Beat - 25 June 2018

It's been four years since Nicki Minaj was in the Singles chart but this week she breaks the drought with Bed at #26. The Trinidadian rapper and singer also has a new album; Queen is yet to chart.
Dutch DJ Tiësto has been releasing singles since 1994 but until this week failed to chart here. That all changes as Jackie Chan with Canadian DJ Dzeko enters at #31.
Xxxtentacion made the headlines this week as news came through the troubled rapper was shot in Florida. Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy was pronounced dead on Monday. This week four previous hits and the new track F*ck Love enter the Top 40.
Martin Garrix has the final new single. Ocean is the Dutch DJ's fifth hit.
Aussie boy band 5 Seconds Of Summer hold onto the top spot as Youngblood the album makes it's debut at #2. It's the lads third album, all three peaking in the Top 2. Their first self-titled disc topped the chart in 2014.
On first look The Carters comes across as a new artist but the two married members are chart regulars. Beyoncé and Jay-Z
got together for the album last year and are about to go on tour to promote the disc. Everything Is Love is new at #12.
Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones better known by his stage name Nas hasn't been in the chart since 2012. The rapper turned actor is back this week with his third Top 40 album NASIR at #15.
Remember Bunny Walters? The Katikati local had four Top 20 singles in the mid 70's with Brandy (#4), Take The Money And Run (#2), Home Isn't Home Anymore (#18) and The Nearest Thing To Heaven (#10). Sadly he passed away in 2016 but a compilation celebrating his career becomes his first album entry at #16. He did top the NZ Heatseeker chart with the album in 2016.
Another artist that has been quiet is Christina Aguilera. Liberation is her first album since 2012 and debuts at #23. It's been a long time coming as she started recording it in 2014.
Two newcomers round off this weeks newbies. Jay Rock is another American rapper, born Johnny Reed McKinzie, Jr. Redemption is his third album but first to chart here, entering the 40 at #33.
And then there's Mike Shinoda. Post Traumatic is the American musician, singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and graphic designer's first disc, new at #40.

Chart Beat - 2 July 18

Londoner Ella Mai opens her account with Boo'd Up new at #38. She performed in the 2014 edition of X-Factor but didn't advance beyond the initial audition for the judges. Not taking no for an answer she started getting interest in Boo'd Up ending up with her first hit single.
Kygo and Imagine Dragons join forces for the other new single Born To Be Yours at #39.
It's been ten years since Panic! At The Disco had a hit single but that hasn't stopped them charting on the Albums Chart. Their sixth album to hit our charts becomes there biggest as Pray For The Wicked enters at #2. The Las Vegas rockers now have four Top 10 albums and two top ten singles.
Xxxtentacion has a big week. The American rapper was shot recently spurring on his sales to a point where he appears more popular posthumously. All five of his hit singles rise into the Top 20 this week, his first album 17 moves up two knotches to #3, his second ? up three to number one and his mixtape Revenge enters the chart at #35.
Over on the Compilations chart there are two new entries. RnB Superclub History, which is a compilation of the RnB Superclub series which has now collected 16 volumes and been charting since 2010; and Country Boys, a compile of some of the greatest male country artists.

Chart Beat - 9 July, 2018

This weeks chart sees another change with the all new Hot Charts. The two new charts focus on the fastest moving tracks on streaming & download services, as well as radio. The two charts show singles in a Top40 and a Top 20 version that just highlights kiwi artists. The Hot Charts replace the Heatseekers Charts.
Drake is the only artist with new singles this week; two of them. Nonstop is the highest, at #8, but the second features the late great Michael Jackson. Don't Matter To Me at #11, is taken from part of an unreleased but recorded 1983 session between Jackson and Canadian singer-songwriter Paul Anka. Both tracks are taken from his new album Scorpion which debuts at #1. It's an elaborate two disc set with 25 tracks over nearly 90 minutes. It's his second chart topping album and eigth overal.
Florence + The Machine narrowly miss out in a third chart topper with High As Hope. New at #2, it explores themes of heartache, family, and finding comfort in loneliness.
The seventh hit album from virtual band Gorillaz enters the chart at #9. The Now Now was recorded quickly so that the band would have more material to play at future concerts according to co-creator, Damon Albarn. One of the tracks, Humility, features George Benson on guitar.
Hands up who remembers Pat McMinn. Sadly she passed away in March but in the 50's she was bigger than Lorde. She was known as New Zealand's voice of the 1950's but she was still a household name in 1994, when she sat down with Jim Sullivan about her music. The OBE holder had more than 25 sides for the TANZA record Label, including her top hit Opo, The Crazy Dolphin which sold more than ten-thousand copies in its first week back in 1956. For four decades, Aucklanders also knew her as the voice of the perennial advertising jingle for the Geddes Dental Renovation clinic. A compile of her biggest The Complete 50's Recordings debuts at #38.
Finally Guns N Roses are back with Appetite For Destruction. The 1988 classic which topped the charts is back due to a limited edition in various formats. One format includes seven 12-inch LPs, seven seven-inch singles, a hardbound book and a variety of collectibles in a wooden box that looks like a wardrobe.
Finally, there is one new album in the Compilations chart. So Country 2018 showcases 46 of the most recent country songs in what is descibed as the country version of the Now franchise.

Hi Tempest, as you know I only follow the charts for the compilation charts and I discovered that the official N.Z. chart has changed formats and they don't seem to have a compilation chart any more, or if they do I can't locate it. Regards John.

Also I read somewhere that someone was pointed out RMNZ made some amendment on the chart rules as well particularly on dealing the artist appearance and artist death limit, and alleged different ratio of premium and ad-funded streaming data.

Drake scores this weeks highest new single with In My Feelings at #3. Taken from his current chart topping album Scorpion, it continues the Canadian with his most successful year to date. Emotionless is also new at #27.
This week is proving to be very quiet with new entries and that theme continues in the album chart.
Lil Skies has the only new long player at #38 with Life Of A Dark Rose. The American rapper with the very common name Lil was born in 1998 as Kimetrius Foose. This is the 19 year olds third mixtape
The compilation chart has one new entry with Ministry of Sound Presents Love Island: The Pool Party at #7.

The ten singles to chart the most weeks accepts a third from Ed Sheeran as Perfect moves to 51 weeks. He joins the ranks with Freddie Fender, Tiki Tanne, Pharrell Williams and the leader New Order but is the only artist to have more than one song in the Top 10.
After a slow week last week we double the number of new entries this week.
Once upon a time having the title God Is A Woman would have been controvercial but Ariana Grande takes that right into the Top 10 with a #6 entry. It's her 13th hit single.
Childish Gambino capitalizes on the success of his recent number one This Is America with his third single Summertime Magic. It debuts at #29.
English DJ Jonas Blue scores single number 4 with Rise at #30 and newcomer Benny Blanco from America opens his account with Eastside at #32. You may not recognize the name but he was one of the producers for Ed Sheeran's album X.
Drake scores the double this week as In My Feelings becomes his 4th number one single and Scorpion remains at the top of the Albums pile for a third straight week. Two new albums also doubles last weeks tally.
Australian indie pop singer-songwriter and producer Amy Shark lists her first album in the chart with this weeks highest newbie.
Love Monster follows the minor success of EP Night Thinker which reached #1 on the now defunct Heatseeker Album Chart on 1 May last year.
Mamma Mia! was a huge success in 2008 producing a number one soundtrack and a stage musical. Now the sequal Here We Go Again produces a soundtrack new this week at #9.
The Compilations chart lists one new entry with the 57th edition of Now That's What I Call Music in at #4. In the UK where the franchize was born they are about to release volume 100.

Last weeks UK number one single reflected the success of England at the FIFA World cup. Baddiel & Skinner and The Lightning Seeds placed 3 Lions at number one becoming the first song with the exact same line-up to hit the top of the Official Singles Chart on four separate occasions. This week as England missed their second title on the footie field the song breaks another record as biggest drop from the top. It drops to #97.

I'm baffled by how the New Zealand Album Chart now 'works'. How come,
I never see 'ABBA Gold' re-entering the Top 40, no matter how high it is in the New Zealand iTunes Chart?

Several Months ago, an ABBA TV Special, (in NZ), saw 2 versions of 'ABBA Gold' to be 1 & 2 in the NZ iTunes Chart. It was like that for a few Days. Yet, ABBA were not in the New Zealand Top 40 that Week.

Just as now the 2nd 'Mamma Mia!' Film has caused 2 versions of 'ABBA Gold' to do very well on NZ iTunes again. Yet, the latest NZ Top 40 has no ABBA in it at all.

Where do ABBA's NZ iTunes Sales go? It can't be that ABBA can only get into a 'Catalogue' or a 'Mid Price' New Zealand Chart - there are no such Charts. Just the Top 40 Albums every Friday...

Could someone answer this for me, please?

Only one new single graces the Top 40 this week. English singer Jess Glynne started out her NZ chart career featuring on vocals for Clean Bandit. After several other collaborations and six UK solo hits which included two number ones, I'll Be There becomes her first NZ solo hit at #33. Incidentally, this is also her third UK chart topper.
Despite a huge week of sales on the iTunes charts for Abba not one of their albums or singles make an appearance. In the UK Abba Gold is now 1166 weeks old and sitting at #7. This is all because of the second Mamma Mia movie and soundtrack which jumps nine knotches to the top of our charts.
An upcoming concert also gives a surge in sales for Celine Dion with The Best So Far: 2018 Tour Edition. With 17 Top 40 singles totalling 204 weeks and 16 albums totaling 348 weeks she was a major artist from the 90's and early naughties. No hit single since 2002 hasn't kept back her popularity though with three sold out concerts planned for next month.
The Adults have the other new album. Consisting of Jon Toogood (Shihad), Tiki Taane (Salmonella Dub), Julia Deans (Fur Patrol), Shayne Carter (Straightjacket Fits and Dimmer), Ladi6, and seven other prominent artists from several other bands, this is one big kiwi supergroup. Their last album reached #4 in 2001, now their second, Haja, is new at #14.

Hi Colin - there are two reasons I can possible think of as to why this is happening:

1) (and in my opinion the more likely of the two options) - the ABBA 'Gold' album has, at one point since 2014 when it last charted, fallen outside of the Top 100 Albums. The following is taken directly from NZ Top 40 chart rules:

The main purpose of the Top 40 Album Chart is to list those recordings that are top contemporary music hit products. In
a majority of instances such product will be new release mainstream, popular music recordings but in some cases it may
be a re-released, re-marketed or re-packaged version of an older recording (e.g. a qualifying older album may be subject
to an advertising campaign to coincide with a tour by the performer of the title).
The Top 40 Album Chart seeks to rank the sales and consumption of such hit products on an as common a basis as
possible. Save for any exclusions detailed in point 3.1.1, eligibility for the Top 40 Album Chart requires that the Product:
(i) meets the Album definition criteria as outlined in point 4.1,
(ii) must not be a compilation album,
(iii) must be less than eighteen (18) months old (from its first New Zealand release date) unless in a continuing Chart
run or the album is re-released, re-marketed or re-packaged or it enjoys a spike in sales due to a significant external
event e.g. a tour by the artist or the death of the artist.

Gold being an older album, would have to always be in the top 100 to now be eligible to make it into the top 40. The chart rules only recently changed, so it is possible that this might have been considered retrospectively, meaning we may never see some of these classic 'Greatest Hits' albums in the Album Chart ever again, save for tour of the artist or death! 2) The second potential reason is that album sales are so very low on iTunes. Streaming still influences the albums chart (as is also shown in a different part in the chart rules) and it's probable that the streaming numbers for 'Gold' will be a bit on the low side in comparison to the standard Post Malone's or Khalid's.

I think #1 is most likely but in lieu of a better answer, the above is what I could find.

Newcomer 6ix9ine (pronounced "six nine") has the highest new single of the week. Born Daniel Hernandez in New York City, the 22 year old rapper is known for his unconventional appearance and controversial behavior. In his homeland FEFE (new at #3) is his first US Top 10 hit although he has been in their singles charts a total of six times since October.
The third NZ hit single from fellow American, DJ Khaled, is new at #7. No Brainer marks the second collaboration with Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, and Quavo
Australian Dean Lewis has the final new single. Opening his account at #32 with Be Alright, this is his biggest Aussie hit thus far.
Three new singles is mirrored in the album chart with three new albums.
Denzel Curry has the highest at #16 with TA13OO. Pronounced Taboo it's the rappers third album but in Godzone his first hit. Totalling at just over 43 minutes, the album is strangely spread over three discs with each having it's own subtitle: Light, Gray and Dark, reflecting the various moods he was in whilst writing.
Onehunga hip hop collective SWIDT have failed to scratch the singles chart despite several entering the NZ Singles Chart and having a Top 4 album, Their Most Electrifying EP debuts at #19 and has been described as a super slick release with a message for NZ.
American rockers Halestorm score a third hit with Vicious at #32. Their biggest to date was Into The Wild Life from 2015 which peaked at #28.

Chart Beat 13 August, 2018

American rapper Travis Scott scores his first NZ number one album with Astroworld and in doing so, gains his first four new singles in the process. It's his third full length album and got the title from the closed-down theme park Six Flags AstroWorld located in Texas. Singles Sicko Mode (#8), Stargazing (#9), Wake Up (#28) and Carousel (#30) are also the first four singles he has charted where he wasn't a collaborating artist and took 13 people to write. His single tally also takes us to exactly 100 new singles this year, so far.
Staying with American rap, Mac Miller posts hit album #4 at #13. Swimming comes in as the highest the 26 year old has charted with 2016's The Divine Feminine being the previous high tide winner at #16.
Staying with the theme of American rap, 28 year old YG also improves on his highest position with Stay Dangerous at #21. Born Keenon Jackson, this is his fourth overall long player.
The compilation chart has one new album in The Brown Hymn Book at #5. This one is a collection of Jazz and Gospel local artists.

Thursday 16 August we mourned the loss of another legendary performer. Known to the world as The Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin burst into the music scene in 1967 with I Never Loved A Man and Respect, going on to gain a total of 42 US top 40 singles. In the 80’s she had seven singles in the NZ Top 50, two of those (Freeway Of Love and a duet with George Michael with I Knew You Were Waiting On Me) going top 3. There is nobody waiting in the wings to take her place and I don’t think anyone can. Such an amazing legacy.
This weeks charts give Bazzi the highest new single with Beautiful at #33. It’s his second hit single after Mine reached #3 last year. The track is taken from the Americans first full length album Cosmic which came out in April.
Two newcomers round off this weeks new singles.
Loud Luxury are Canadian duo Andrew Fedyk and Joe Depace. Their debut single Body, new at #38, has so far managed a #4 peak in their homeland.
Scottish singer songwriter Tom Walker has been putting singles out since 2016 but it’s his Leave A Light On track that debuts at #40 this week. It’s also his first in the UK managing a #7 peak so far.
Over on the album chart it’s Nicki Minaj who scores the highest new album. The Trinidadian-American rapper places Queen at #8 to be her second highest album entry after Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded from 2012. This is her fourth long player and the first to not use the word Pink in its title. She set out to make this her best album yet.
Shadowing the singles chart yet again, there are two newcomers in the mix.
Trippie Redd is Michael White, an American rapper, with his first full length album. To date there have been two mix tapes and six EP’s all unsuccessful in his homeland. Life’s A Trip Is new at #11.
The Beth’s are an Auckland four-piece with their debut album Future Me Hates Me at #19. The rockers have been friends for ages putting out a debut EP in 2016 called Warm Blood.
The new entries are rounded off in the compilations chart with Golden Greats Of Country at #7.
Finally, over on the NZ Albums Chart we have a new number one on top of the longevity list. Six60, push their debut self-titled album to number two with Six60(2). Both albums are on 181 weeks but the second spend more weeks at the top.

Breathin’ (#11) and Sweetener (#40) are the only two new singles this week and, along with the re-entry of No Tears Left To Cry (#22) and current hit God Is A Woman at #5, they make Ariana Grande the artist of the week. They all come from her new album Sweetener which debuts at #1.
Avantdale Bowling Club debuts just behind her with his first album at #2. The self titled disc is actually the work of Tom Scott who has been a part of Home Brew and @Peace. He worked alongside a live cello, drums from Julien Dyne, and a string of session musicians.
The passing of Aretha Franklin last week has had her singes bounce back into the charts around the globe. Not so here, but she does make an impact on the album chart. Together: The Very Best Of Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding at #11 and A Brand New Me (which is old tracks recorded with new backing from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the same vein as two Elvis and one Roy Orbison album) at #36
She does make the Hot Singles Chart with I Say A Little Prayer at #7 (from 1968), Respect at #8 (1967), (You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman at #10 (1967), Think #14 (1968), and I Knew You Were Waiting with George Michael at #17 (1987). I would have preferred to see her in the singles chart like in America and England.... One footnote though, it’s the first time soul sensation Otis Redding has ever charted in our albums chart.
Also charting well overseas is ABBA due to the current popularity of Mamma Mia! Pity our chart rules don’t accomodate this.

Chart Beat - 3 September, 2018

Busy singles chart this week with five new entries.
Calvin Harris and Sam Smith top the bill with their first duet. Both artists collaborated with the writing along with Canadian Jessie Reyez who features on the track. Harris sticks to production for Promises, new at #16.
George Ezra is hot property in the UK but over here has failed to chart since 2014. Biggest hit to date is the number one Budapest but new single Shotgun at #29 could match it. It is currently at number one in England.
Bastille features with Marshmello at #31 with Happier. It's the Amercan's third hit this year.
On 2 July I mentioned that Panic! At The Disco haven't had a hit single in ten years. Well the drought is over as High Hopes enters the chart at #35. Their fifth hit single, it has a high tide mark in Australia, peaking, so far, at #7.
Finally comes Zedd. Happy Now is the Russian producers fifth single, coming in at #39.
Switching to the album chart for three newbies this week.
Neil and Liam Finn join forces as a father/son duet album with Lightsleeper at #11 for the perfect fathers day album. This is Neil's 9th solo album post Crowed House (6) and Split Enz (8) so when you add in those two bands plus a couple with his brother Tim, it's a huge body of work. Following in his footsteps is Liam who now has three solo albums and two with Betchadupa to add to this one. Who said the Finn's are not legendary.
Seven member South Korean boyband BTS
with the third Love Yourself album in the trilogy. Love Yourself / 'Answer' new at #11 contains 25 tracks, seven of which are new and the others remixes.
Finally comes American hard rockers Alice In Chains with Rainier Fog new at #23. Their sixth studio album, is the highest they have been in the chart since 2009.
R&B; Solid Gold which contains five discs of hits from the 90's and naughties debuts at #5 on the compilations chart.

If that record sold well it would show up in the weekly Top 40. Nowadays there is no physical single, with condumers buying online or simply streaming. That makes for a very different chart and, its getting boring. In March last year Ed Sheeran released a new album and the whole track listing appeared in the singles chart. With chart rules now allowing a maximum four new tracks a week from an artist, that trend has almost become a weekly occurance. This week, Eminem has a new album and four of those tracks debut in the Singles Chart. The Ringer (#2), Lucky You (#3), Greatest (#12) and Fall (#14) take his total to 32 hit singles. Another trend associated with this is most of these singles drop out fairly quickly. Lets see what happens over the next few weeks. Of course his new album Kamikaze debuts at #1. Bring back the 45 rpm single!
Further down the chart at #37 is Trip, the follow up single for Ella Mai. Boo'd Up peaked at #8 in July.
South African-born Australian Troye Sivan is back with his fourth hit album. All four have gone Top 3 and Bloom debuts at #3. This is actually his second album, two previous entries were EP's. Bloom, has been called Sivan's "sex album"
Staying across the ditch, from Melbourne is Tash Sultana with Flow State new at #12. The 23 year old multi-instrumentalist released her debut EP Notion in 2016 but this is her first full length album and first to chart here.
Finally in the Album charts new entry pile is Englishman Michael Rosenberg (aka Passenger). Runaway, new at #22, is his sixth hit album.
On the strength of her NZ shows, Pink re-enters the chart with two albums and gains seven knotches to #2 with her current album Beautiful Trauma.

Agreed Tempest. This almost weekly occurrence of whatever album is popular charting with four singles is just getting boring and making for some stupid chart runs.

The 21st hit from Kanye West is this weeks highest new single. With help from Lil Pump and premiering on pornhub, I Love It enters the chart at #4.
Eminem continues to chart well with his 9th number one album and adds two more songs to the singles chart. Not Alike debuts at #20 and title track Kamikaze at #27.
Paul McCartney surprises with a #12 debut for his 18th solo album Egypt Station. It's the highest he has been in the chart since 1993 when he took Off The Ground to #4. The former Beatle released a double A side single in June which saw I Don't Know reach #164 in France and Come To Me #18 in Belgium and Hungary. McCartney also recorded three songs with Ryan Tedder. One of the songs, Fuh You, is included on the album.
Hip Hop group $uicideBoy$ make their debut at #15 with I Want To Die In New Orleans.
Russ (short for Russell Vitale) is another American rapper to make his debut. Zoo is new at #35.
Over on the compilation chart a radio promotion pushes Now 57 off it's perch. Magic 60's is 42 hits from the sixties.
Finally, another American rapper is found dead. Mac Miller never enjoyed an American Top 40 single but did produce five Top 4 albums. Over here it was a similar story. Four of his albums charted inside the Top 40 and there was a collaboration with Ariana Grande in 2013. He was found on 7 September from a suspected drug overdose. This week his album Swimming re-enters the chart at #7 and four of its tracks stand side by side in the Hot 40.

Chart Beat - 24 September, 2018

This week we have the shortest number one single since 2013. Harlem Shake by Baauer topped the charts in February 2013 and lasted only 2:08. This week Kanye West tops the chart with Love It lasting only 2:07. Songs in the Singles chart continue to be shorter. This week the average length of a song this year is 3:31; That's the lowest it has been since 1976. The peak was in 1994 when the average length was 4:16. The trend has been moving down since this turn of the century but the last few years it's taken a dive.
There are five new singles this week and for a change, it's from five different artists.
Rapper Machine Gun Kelly lists single number three with Rap Devil at #24. The song is Kelly's response to Not Alike by Eminem.
Another American rapper Khalid lists his third single for the year at #29. Better is a non album single and charts here first. Of all the hits he has been involved with this is only the third time he has done it alone.
Newcomers Dynoro and Gigi D'Agostino are next with In My Mind at #32. Dynoro is a Lithuanian music producer; D'Agostino an Italian DJ.
Electronic duo Silk City team up with Dua Lipa for Electricity at #34. It's Silk Cities first and Dua Lipa's sixth hit.
Finally comes LSD, a supergroup consisting of English musician Labrinth, Australian singer Sia and American producer Diplo, Thunderclouds debuts at #38.
Mitch James very nearly knocked Eminem off his perch on the album chart with his debut self titled long player. The kiwi has had five hit singles on the NZ Singles chart, two of them, Move On and 21, going Top 2, but he's never had a mainstream hit single. Whilst it's long overdue, his debut album enters the Top 40 at #2.
Staying local, The Chills from Dunedin are no strangers to either Top 40's. They enjoyed two Top 3 albums in the early 90's with their latest Snow Bound becoming their third Top 10. New at #9, this is their 8th studio album since 1987.
6lack is American singer and rapper Ricardo Valentine. His debut album East Atlanta Love Letter, new at #15, is his second album following his first from 2016.
Finally comes Carrie Underwood. Cry Pretty is her third NZ hit album, new at #32.
Finally, the last time Paul McCartney had a number one album in New Zealand was in 1975 with his album Venus And Mars. Last week his new album Egypt Station debuted at #12 here but since then it has gone to the top in America. That brings the 76 year olds total to 27 chart toppers when you consider The Beatles, Wings and solo albums. For the record Egypt Station is at #3 in England and #4 across the ditch.

I'm really sad that more New Zealand artists can chart on the proper singles chart. I can't imagine it's much consolation being high on the 'NZ Singles Chart' or 'Hot Singles Chart' when you can't chart properly. Broods, Mitch James and Kimbra have all had really good releases of late and have gone nowhere with them. I'll be interested to see, under the current chart format, how long it will be before we have our next proper kiwi #1 single!

Chart Beat - 1 October, 2018

Only two new singles chart this week but one stands out from the other. What is so interesting about this one is the two performers are dead. Lil Peep and Xxxtentacion both passed away in the last year, one from a drug overdose and the other was shot. The track Falling Down was originally recorded as Sunlight on Your Skin but never got finished due to Lil Peep's passing. On hearing of his death, XXXTentacion recorded a verse as a tribute but he too never got to see the finished product due to being shot back in June. The duo debut at number one and make a new statistic in the process. It's not the first time we have had a posthumous number one - there was Elvis Presley with A Little Less Conversation in 2002 and Bob Marley with Turn Your Lights Down Low in 1999, but this is the first double posthumous chart topper.
The other new single is the seventh hit single from Eminem's album Kamikaze to chart in four weeks. Killshot is new at #6. The others have either fallen off the chart or are on the way down.
Staying with the singles chart, Ed Sheeran takes Perfect onto 60 weeks for only the fourth time in the history of the chart. Of those four singles, he has two of them. Here's that list:
1. Blue Monday - New Order 74 weeks
2. Shape Of You - Ed Sheeran 68 weeks
3. Happy - Pharrell Williams 62 weeks
4. Perfect - Ed Sheeran 60 weeks.
Those with a keen eye will notice the two Sheeran tracks come from the same album.
Texas collective Brockhampton first charted last year with Saturation II peaking at a lowly #35. Since then there was Saturation III which failed to chart but this week album number four becomes their biggest. Iridescence debuts at #2 and is the first since rapper Ameer Vann's departure from the group following sexual misconduct allegations.
Former Guns n Roses guitarist Slash is back with album number four. Entering the chart at #15, Living The Dream featuting Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators is actually meant to be a sarcastic statement about the world we're living in at the moment.
American rapper Machine Gun Kelly list his third hit album BINGE at #39.

George Ezra hit the top of the chart in 2014 with Budapest. This week he does it again with the 12th chart topper of the year with Shotgun.
American DJ's The Chainsmokers score their ninth Top 40 single with This Feeling at #35. This one features American country pop singer and songwriter Kelsea Ballerini who was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
In 1950 legendary crooner Nat 'King" Cole released one of his most well-known hits Mona Lisa. American rapper Lil Wayne has been sitting on a song with the same name (although that's where the comparisons stop) and this week takes that track into the chart at #39. It is taken from his new album Tha Carter V which also debuts in the chart, at #3.
Cher hasn't been in our album chart for 16 and a half years but on the popularity of movie Mama Mia bounds back to stardom with Dancing Queen at #2. It's the 72-year old's 26th solo album and consists of ten cover songs from, you guessed it, Abba.
Samoan born Ventry Parker going by the name Poetik opens his account at #7 with HAMOFIED. Based in New Zealand, he is starting to make waves in the U.S. market.
Staying with rap, American Logic places his fifth hit album LSIV at #13 on entry. Incidentally, the title was abbrieviated from Young Sinatra IV.
Two new albums enter the compilations chart. The Greatest Hits For Kids, a two CD set with recent hits and the latest offering from the Ministry Of Soul label with MOS Sessions: Rebirth

American Halsey lists this weeks highest new single. Without Me, new at #20, is her first new stand alone single this year after the calaborating number one Eastside she had with Benny Blanco last month.
Ella Mai makes it three hit singles as she places Whatchamacallit next to Trip at #23. All three tracks comes from her self titled debut album.
William Sami Étienne Grigahcine (aka DJ Snake) places his latest Taki Taki at #28. Incidentally, Taki Taki is a Latin, reggaeton number. Oh and Reggaeton is a music genre influenced by hip hop and Latin American and Caribbean music.
I half expected to see Rod Stewart's latest high in this weeks chart. His 30th studio album Blood Red Roses debuted at the top in the UK this week but over here it fails to chart. Instead we have a surprise album debuting at the top and pushing out Eminem.
The fifth studio album from American duo Twenty One Pilots becomes their first NZ number one. Trench is a concept album set in the fictional city of Dema and the surrounding valley known as "Trench". If you have a turntable the vinyl format comes in four different colours.
The remake of A Star Is Born debuts its soundtrack at #6. Originally the movie came out in 1937 and had a rock musical starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristopherson in 1976. That version topped the charts in 1977. Now the forth remake, this one stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
Two kiwi's round off this weeks new albums.
Anika Moa drops her 8th Top 40 album at #16. The last two were targeting the young but this self titled disc puts her back in radioland. Now all we need is a hit single.
Nelson born Wellington based Rhian Sheehan is currently on tour. His third album A Quiet Divide debuts at #17 and gives him a new peak position in the chart. His last two peaked at #27 and #31.

Chart Beat - 22 October, 2018

Ed Sheeran pushes into the Top 3 longevity list as Perfect clocks up it's 63rd week. What is more significant is that he also owns the #2 song (Shaoe Of You) and the #5 song (Thinking Out Loud). The song to chart the most weeks is still Blue Monday by New Order with 74 weeks.
American rapper Bill K. Kapri (aka Kodak Black lists his first NZ hit single in style with ZEZE at #7. To date he is more known by a lude instagram live feed involving several men and a woman. In the US he has been charting since 2015 with singles, an album and several mixtapes.
The latest version of A Star Is Born yields its first hit single at #18. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper are new in the chart with Shallow.
The eigth hit single from Eminem's album Kamikaze debuts at #34. Venom is his 36th hit overall.
Little Mix have the final new single with Woman Like Me, at #35. The British girl group now have nine hit singles since they opened their account in 2012.
Bruno Mars takes his third album 24K Magic onto 100 weeks. His is the 35th album to reach 100 in the charts history.
Ella Mai has now scored three hit singles so it was obvious her debut album would do well. Her self titled disc enters the chart at #7.
Also with his first album is American rapper Quavo. Quavo Huncho is new at #13.
English lass Jess Glynne took her debut album I Cry When I Laugh to #36 in 2015. Now with her sophomore disc she takes Always In Between to #16 on entry.
Australian Paul Kelly is no stranger to the charts; he's been charting here since 1987. Nature is his latest and 24th studio album. Debuting at #40, it's his 11th in our charts.
Getting the re-release fanfare is the 1999 chart topper The General Electric from Shihad. Now remastered and on two coloured vinyl discs both red and white, they re-enter at #14.

The second hit single for Billie Eilish is this weeks highest. When The Partys Over new at #3, peaks one knotch higher than Lovely from June. Meanwhile, her album don't smile at me drops two knotches to #19.
Post Malone joins forces with Swae Lee for his 10th hit single this year. Sunflower was written by Malone and features on the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie due out on Boxing Day.
Rita Ora is all set to release her next album Let Me Love You, new at #37, is taken from Phoenix and due out 23 November.
Last week Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper entered the chart with the first hit single from A Star Is Born. That track, Shallow, jumps 16 knotches to #2 as Lady Gaga debuts with her 21st hit single Always Remember Us This Way at #39. History also repeats itself as the soundtrack tops the charts. Back in 1977 A Star Is Born, this time with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristpherson topped the chart for nine weeks.
Of the seven Top 40 albums from American rockers Disturbed to hit our charts, five of them have peaked in the Top 2. That trend continues this week with their latest Evolution which debuts at #2.
It had to happen eventually; a movie about Brit rockers Queen. Bohemian Rhapsody starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, and with Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor serving as creative consultants on the film, the soundtrack debuts at #6 just three days after the launch of the movie.
Newcomers Greta Van Fleet are an American rock band from Frankenmuth, Michigan, formed in 2012. Anthem Of The Peaceful Army is their debut album and has an impressive start in our charts at #7.
American Khalid entered our album chart 84 weeks ago with American Teen. Now his sophomore disc Suncity debits at #11. This one is a 7-track EP.
Dunedin lass Jenny Mitchell launches her chart account with Wildfires at #25. She plays two concerts this weekend in Invercargill before heading to Auckland next month. At 19, she has already won a NZ Gold Guitar Award.
Future and Juice WRLD join forces for their album Wrld on Drugs at #28. With 16 tracks over 49 minutes there is only one song over three minutes.
Finally Rüfüs Du Sol from Sydney list their second Top 40 album at #32. Solace is the groups third album.

Chart Beat - 5 November, 2018

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper take Shallow to the top of the singles heap this week and in doing so, score the double. Taken from the soundtrack to A Star Is Born, it's currently the second most popular movie in the land.
XXXTENTACION continues to be more popular in death with another new single. He passed away on 18 June with a total of 31 weeks in the singles chart. This week he totals 84 weeks across his seven hits. Arms Aound You is his latest with help from Lil Pump and debuts at #17.
Another American rapper opens his account this week. Sheck Wes. Born Khadimoul Fall in 1998, he took Mo Bamba to #16 in the US last year. It's taken a while but that song debutes here at #30.
Dua Lipa and BLACKPINK join forces for this weeks third new single. Kiss And Make Up, new at #32, helps Korean the female quartet to have the most entries in the US charts for a Korean female group and is Dua Lipa's seventh hit here.
Suncity was a big protest song from Artists United Against Apartheid in 1985. There is, however no comparison for the song with the same title from Khalid which debuts at #35. The track is taken from his new EP of the same name which drops three knotches to #14 on the albums chart.
Japanese record producer, singer, songwriter and rapper Joji (born George Miller) first came on the scene here last year, charting one week at #38 with his EP In Tongues. That rather modest start wasn't the last we saw of him as his first full length album debuts at #10. Ballads 1 is only 35 minutes and six seconds long and is, as the title describes, focussed on ballads.
Aucklanders Alae open their account at #33 with Henry St. The four-piece describe their music as a brand of indie pop. They came together for the first time as a quartet at the NZ Rhythm & Vines Festival.
Canadian rapper Tory Lanez peaked at #31 in March with his first hit album Memories Don't Die. LoVE me Now is his thir full length album and debuts this week at #37.
Over on the compilations chart a radio promotion debuts at the top. The Breeze: Totally 80's is the radio stations 15th hit album.

Chart Beat - 12 November, 2018

Ariana Grande dives straight into the #2 this week with her 16th hit single. Taken from her next album due out soon, thank u, next, is the title track and described as a phrase Grande and fellow singer/songwriter Victoria Monét use.
Ava Max (born Amanda Koci) lists her debut single Sweet But Psycho at #35. The American has already topped the Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian charts with the track.
One more single demands a mention. Be prepared for a surprise. Cast your mind back to 1975. A British band proposed to release their next single amas huge critisism from management. Not only would radio not play it due to it's nearly six minutes in length but rock and opera does not work together. Queen went on to prove them wrong as Bohemian Rhapsody was born. In New Zealand it topped the chart for two weeks (9 in the UK) and returned to the chart in 1992 through the popularity of movie Wayne's World. The movie Bohemian Rhapsody is responsible for the classic track re-entering at #31. The Platinum Collection from 2002 (#16), Queen's Greatest Hits from 1981 (#24) and Greatest Hits Vol. 2 from 1991 (#37) also re-enter whilst the soundtrack from the film that caused all the hype slips up a knotch to #2 behind A Star Is Born making it two soundtracks in the Top 2.
Metro Boomin (aka Leland Wayne) from the States has the highest new album of the week. Not All Heroes Wear Capes is the DJ's first solo hit after the #15 peak of Without Warning from last year which he did with 21 Savage and Offset.
Andrea Bocelli tops the chart in the UK and America with his latest. Si (new at #17) It's the Italian tenor's 16th studio disc which includes a duet with his son Matteo and the track Amo soltanto te which he co-wrote with Ed Sheeran.
The Prodigy first charted in 1995. The English electronic band place their seventh,
No Tourists, at #28.
Australian Matt Corby is back with sophomore album Rainbow Valley at #30. He first charted in 2016 with Telluric which peaked at #4.
With the popularity of A Star Is Born which she starred in back in 1977, it seems fitting to have a new album from Barbra Streisand. Walls new at #38 is the 76 year old's 36th album and features the politically charged single Don't Lie to Me.
American rapper Vince Staples rounds off this weeks newbies with FM! at #40. It's his second NZ hit album.

Muse slip in just behind Imagine Dragons with Simulation Theory at #4. It's the English bands eighth hit album.
Lil Peep is another fallen rapper. His follow up album to Come Over When You're Sober Pt. 1 which peaked at #19 debuts at #9. Pt 2 is very short at only 38 minutes.
Sticking with American rappers, Trippie Redd lists his second new disc since August at #20. A Love Letter To You 3 is a mixtape
Finally Jonas Blue lists his debut album Blue at #38.
The Beatles are back with TheWhite Album in its repackaged and extended 50th anniversary editioin at #18.
Over on the complations chart, The Best Christmas Album In The World ... Ever! from 2003 re-enters for the fourth time and long running franchises Ten Guitars, MOS The Annual and Now That's What I Call Music all list new albums. It's the Annual's 19th, Ten Guitar's 11th and Now's 58th.

That's amazing - never would have guessed that. Very interesting factoid. Great to see (finally) another New Zealand song make the top 40. First Kiwi to make the top 40 since Sons of Zion debut in April this year? A bit sad when you think about it.

I agree Alley. Sad NZ artists don't chart here. Wish they would do something about it. They play on radio but never get to chart.

Imagine Dragons score their second new single in two weeks with Bad Liar at #35. Taken from their current album Origins, this is their 12th Top 40 single.
Swede Zara Larsson has so far taken her latest single Ruin My Life to #2 in her home country. It's the lead single from the new, as yet unamed forthcoming album, and debuts at #37.
Michael Bublé enjoys the highest new entry with tenth studio album Love at #2. Rumours have been circulating this would be his final album but his management has strongly denied it. The lead single from the disc is When I Fall In Love which was made famous by Doris Day in 1952 and 1956 for Nat "King" Cole. To put it in his own words: " I wanted to make an album to make babies to."
Mumford And Sons list album number four at #4. The band recorded 25 tracks for Delta, ending up with 14 for the standard issue.
The soundtrack to The Greatest Showman continues to sell well, sliding up two knotches to #17 this week. Meanwhile The Greatest Showman: Reimagined debuts at #5 with covers from the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Panic! at the Disco, Sara Bareilles and Pentatonix.
Little Mix also dive into the Top 10 with their latest. LM5 is as you would imagine, their fifth long player. New at #6, the title is based on the practice by fans of various acts to promote a forthcoming unnamed album with a hashtag stating the act's initials and album number.
He started out as front man to one of the biggest bands in the history of out album chart. With 601 chart weeks over 11 albums, Dire Straits had 8 of those albums peak inside the Top 3. Now Mark Knopfler is a solo act with his 12th hit album new this week at #10. Down The Road Wherever is described as 14 songs that are "slow and elegant".
American Brandon Paak Anderson (aka Anderson .Paak) took Malibu to #39 in 2016. Now he improves on that high tide mark with his second, Oxnard, at #22. He says this is the album he dreamt of making when he was at high school.
Mariah Carey slots in at the foot of the chart with Caution. New at #40, this is her fifteenth studio album.
Suzy Cato Presents The Totally Awesome Kiwi Kids Album with 25 tracks from various artists is the sole new entry to the Compilations Chart.

Chart Beat - 3 December, 2018

The chart slows a bit this week as Christmas starts to make it's appearance. We have only two new singles and three albums.
The third hit single from Billie Eilish makes its debut at #17. Come Out And Play follows Lovely and When The Party's Over that both went Top 4 this year.
The latest single from Ellie Goulding has been described as the "Hottest Record in the World" by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 in the UK. It includes Diplo and Swae Lee and is her 13th NZ hit single. Close To Me opens its account at #40.
Kiwi Country music legend Dennis Marsh is back with his tenth Top 40 album and this weeks highest new entry. For this album he wanted to "celebrate the good old kiwi backyard party, when all you needed was a couple of guitars, a Ukulele, some food and drinks, great friends and a lot of laughs." His
Backyard Party is new at #4 while his Christmas From The Heart from 2013 also re-enters the chart - at #27.
And on the topic of Christmas, Mr Christmas aka Michael Bublé is back for the 8th consecutive year with his Christmas album at #5
The second studio album from Brit Rita Ora drops at #18. It's been six years since her last. She has had legal problems, which held up the second. Phoenix is new at #18.
Daniel Hernandez (aka 6ix9ine) lists his second hit album this year at #25. Dummy Boy is actually his first album. Day69, his last entry, was a mixtape and peaked at #15.

Chart Beat - 10 December, 2018

Daniel Hernandez (aka 6ix9ine) reached #3 in August with his first hit single. This week his second and third enter the chart. KIKA (#27) and MAMA (#29) are taken from his first full length studio album Dummy Boy which debuted last week.
Mark Ronson had a huge #1 in 2014 that most people think was a Bruno Mars song. The truth is, Mars only collaborated on the Uptown Funk which topped the chart for 9 weeks. Maybe people will recognise Ronson's new single for what it really is. Nothing Breaks Like A Heart new at #35 features Miley Cyrus so maybe not.
Lukas Graham has also had a chart topper. In 2016 7 Years spent 8 weeks at the top. The Danish band place single number three Love Someone at #40.
Six new albums grace the Top 40.
Country singer Charley Pride had two NZ Top 50 singles in the 80's with You're My Jamaica (#47) and Mountain Of Love (#41) but it's the album chart where he had more success. His 11th, 50 Golden Years Of Pride, is new at #7 and presedes the 84 year olds NZ tour. Incidentally he has had 30 number ones on the US Country Chart.
The 1975 were predicted to top the UK charts with their latest and that's exacly what happened. That album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, is new here at #9 and is the English bands third. But wait, there's more. Their next album has already been announced. Notes on a Conditional Form is expected in May.
Westports Mel Parsons debuts just outside the Top 10 with Glass Heart. New at #11 it's the Indie folk and alternative country artists third hit album.
Ski Mask The Slump God is the latest in a string of US rappers who will problably chart this week and be gone next week (and there have been a lot lately). Born Stokeley Goulbourne in 1996 his debut album Stokeley is new at #24.
And staying on that topic, American rapper Meek Mill debuts at #34. Born Robert Williams in 1987, this is his fourth album but first to chart here.
The last two albums from American rapper Earl Sweatshirt both charted only one week. His third, which explores the passing of his father and uncle with Some Rap Songs is new at #35.
Finally, the latest from English band Clean Bandit is new at #40. What Is Love? is their second Top 40 album.

Chart Beat - 17 December, 2018

With just over a week to go till we get a visit from the man in red, the chart is beginnging to get a little bit festive. This week sees the return of Mariah Carey (All I Want For Christmas Is You at #11), Wham! (Last Christmas at #24), Michael Bublé (It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas at #36) and Bandaid (Do They Know It's Christmas? at #37).
One new single makes it into the mix and it's another track fom the late Xxxtentacion. whoa (mind in awe) is from the 19 minute third album Skins and debuts at #27. The album debuts at #9.
Of the seven new albums last week, five leave to make way for this weeks movers.
The fifth live album from London band Coldplay debuts at #30. Live In Buenos Aires was recorded on 15 November 2017 in La Plata, which was the final concert of the A Head Full of Dreams Tour and marks the first time a Coldplay concert has been released in full. It's their third live album to chart.
Van Morrison lists his 40th studio album The Prophet Speaks at #40. His fourth album in 15 months sees him working again with multi-instrumentalist Joey DeFrancesco who contributed on his last album You're Driving Me Crazy. That disc only managed a single one week entry at the top of the Heatseekers chart on 7 May this year. It's been an incredible career for the 73 year old who began with Irish band Them in 1964. In New Zealand he can now lay claim to 38 hit albums. This album cements his position at the top of the pile tied with Elton John for most albums charted since the chart began in 1975.
The Compilation Chart sees one new album: Mix: The Greatest Hits is a 2 CD set containing predictable hits from the seventies and eighties.

Chart Beat - 24 December, 2018

Two new singles and two new albums are we enter Christmas week in this weeks chart.
The new Ariana Grande single shares the title of a John Lennon classic from 1971 but that's where the comparisons stop. Taken from her forhcoming album Thank U, Next, Imagine, new at #16, speaks about Grande's denial of failed relationships.
Robert Williams (aka Meek Mill) recently peaked with his debut album Championships at #34, His first hit single, Going Bad makes its debut this week at #36.
At the age of 69 Bruce Springsteen seems far from slowing down. He has recently just finished a residency on Broadway in New York that consisted of five shows a week. Beginning on October 3 last year the season was extended twice taking it through to December 15, 2018. The CD Springsteen On Broadway documents that marathon spanning 30 songs and various formats including a super bundle comprising four records. It debuts at #12.
Orchestra Wellington is New Zealand's oldest regional orchestra founded over sixty years ago. LIVE marks the first time they have charted and debuts at #40.
One more week and Six60 hit another milestone. In the 43 year history of the chart only three albums have managed to clock up 200 weeks. If the lads can hold on one more week, their Six60(2) album will become the fourth. What a way to end the year.

Oh, and the #1 goes to Mariah Carey with All I Want For Christmas Is You. That track has taken 24 years and 3 weeks to hit the top. That puts her in second place for longest time to reach the top from debut. Phil Collins holds that record for In The Air Tonight that took 27 years 4 months. Phew!!!
Over on the album chart it's more subdued with only two new albums.
Kora brothers Brad and Stu are back under the moniker L.A.B. with their second album L.A.B. II. Their first album peaked at #15 last year but this weeks #12 entry does better. The first one is still in the NZ Albums chart and has clocked up 57 weeks.
American rapper 21 Savage has the final new album of the year with i am > i was at #27. For the record the title should be pronounced I Am Greater Than I Was.
Finally, Six60 make it 200 weeks with Six60(2). It's the fourth album to reach the milestone since 1975 when the chart was born.
