Each year, ICTP organizes about 50 activities (Schools/Colleges, Conferences, Workshops, etc.) either on its Trieste premises, or at outside venues, usually in a developing or emerging country. These activities are known as ICTP's Scientific Calendar. Topics for activities are not restricted to theory. The activities are selected on the basis of scientific novelty and impact on the international community, with special emphasis on bringing together scientists from South and North, basic training for younger scientists, and hands-on training for computer-intensive subjects.
ICTP encourages proposals for activities to be added to its Scientific Calendar; for more details, see http://www.ictp.it/call-for-proposals.aspx.

Federated Institutes are agreements between ICTP and scientific institutes in developing countries that enable young scientists, up to the age of 40, to participate in ICTP's scientific programmes on a cost-sharing basis. The agreement stipulates that:
(1) The Federated Institute has up to a total of 90 person days available at ICTP during the three-year validity of the agreement with not more than 45 person days in a given calendar year.
(2) Members of the Federated Institute apply to ICTP activities but the acceptance and the duration of the visit are determined solely by the selection committees at ICTP.
(3) Cost sharing is understood to mean that ICTP provides local accommodation in Trieste and a per diem while the travel expenses are borne by both ICTP and the Federated Institute.
