Standard emergency health kits

WHO has developed standardized health kits of medicines and medical supplies to meet different health needs in humanitarian emergencies and disasters.

These kits are developed to provide reliable and affordable medicines and supplies quickly to those in need. The kits are used by United Nations agencies, nongovernmental organizations and national governments.

Based primarily on WHO’s Essential Medicines list and guidelines on treatment of specific medical conditions, the contents of the kits are frequently reviewed and updated to adapt to changing needs based on experience in emergency situations.

A certain number of kits are prepositioned in strategic locations to be mobilized quickly in times of need. Long term agreements with suppliers are also in place to ensure rapid shipment wherever needed.

Health on wheels: mobile clinic brings vital care to displaced Yazidis in Iraq

12 November 2018 -- To meet their primary health needs, WHO provided six mobile clinics that serve 40,000 people in Sumer, Zahko, Amedi and Shikhan districts. The Duhok Directorate of Health (DoH) also contributes to the programme. This programme is providing vital care for one of Iraq’s most vulnerable populations. The Yazidi from Sinjar are one of the country’s lowest socio economic groups, and massive displacement has only added to their burdens, especially those who live outside of formal camps.

WHO airlifts over 500 tons of essential medicines and medical supplies to Yemen

3 September 2018 -- The shipments also include 100 nutrition kits sufficient to meet the needs of more than 5000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition with medical complications for three months, in addition to various types of rapid diagnostic tests and laboratory reagents to cover the urgent needs and strengthen the capacity of central laboratories and blood banks. Medicines to treat non-communicable diseases (NCDs), surgical instruments, interagency emergency health kits, intravenous (IV) fluids and various types of medications needed by health facilities across the country were also among the medical supplies. Likewise, 50 000 rapid diagnostic tests to effectively diagnose cholera, and 21 trauma kits for mass casualty management were delivered to Aden from Djibouti port.

SAM kits in Yemen: WHO steps up efforts to fight severe acute malnutrition cases in Yemen

7 December 2017 -- A young mother sits in the waiting room of the Al-Sabeen Hospital in Sana’a, desperately holding onto her 10-month old baby girl, Menamah. The journey from their home in Al-Jawf governorate to the hospital has taken a physical toll on both mother and child. Menamah is suffering from severe acute malnutrition, and her frail, little body is further weakened by complications from pneumonia, gastroenteritis and a skin infection.

Beyond the bullets and bombs: Saving the lives of chronic disease patients living in conflict settings

23 November 2017 -- WHO has developed a new health kit to support treatment for chronic disease patients in emergency settings. Three years after the kit’s conceptualization, the first shipment of 6 kits, enough for 60 000 medical treatments, has been delivered cross-border from Turkey to northern Syria.

New Kit for the treatment of Severe Acute Malnutrition launched by WHO in South Sudan

6 June 2016 - WHO launched the first ever drug module kit for the management of Severe Acute Malnutrition and Medical Complications in children. South Sudan is the first country in the world to introduce the use of the kit. The kit constitutes the most essential and basic medicine for the treatment of children with severe acute malnutrition and medical conditions. The kits comprise four basic modules of routine, basic, supplementary and malaria drugs.
