7 million people receive record levels of lifesaving TB treatment but 3 million still miss out

17 October 2019 - More people received life-saving treatment for tuberculosis (TB) in 2018 than ever before, largely due to improved detection and diagnosis. Globally, 7 million people were diagnosed and treated for TB - up from 6.4 million in 2017 – enabling the world to meet one of the milestones towards the United Nations political declaration targets on TB.

WHO launches a multisectoral accountability framework to end TB as requested by the World Health Assembly and the UN General Assembly

23 May 2019 - The World Health Organization has released a multisectoral accountability framework to accelerate progress to end the TB epidemic. The framework was requested by the World Health Assembly and the UN General Assembly in 2018. WHO seeks to enable its adaptation and use by Member States and their partners at country, regional and global levels in 2019. The Framework was shared with Member States in advance of the 72nd World Health Assembly.

The Philippines Department of Health and WHO call for 'all-out-war' against TB

24 April 2019 - The Philippines Department of Health (DOH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) jointly call for an all-out-war against tuberculosis (TB), the number one infectious killer in the country. TB claims the lives of over 70 Filipinos every day. There are also one million Filipinos who have active TB disease, the third highest global prevalence rate next to South Africa and Lesotho.

WPRO leads partner efforts to strengthen capacity towards scaling up programmatic response to drug-resistant TB

12 April 2019 - Following the release of the 2018 WHO consolidated guidelines on the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis, the Western Pacific Regional Office(WPRO) of WHO through its Green Light Committee (GLC) mechanism organized a consultant training workshop held from 27-29 March 2019 in Sydney, Australia. A total of 25 experts were equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills, including practical problem-solving, diplomacy and cultural competencies to ensure delivery of high quality support and constructive communication at all levels within the TB programme and government in line with WHO standards.

Accelerating action to end the TB and HIV epidemics in the Western Pacific Region

02 April 2019 - Inspired by commitments made at the first UN high level meeting on TB in 2018, the WHO Regional Office of the Western Pacific Region organised a ‘Joint TB and HIV programme managers meeting' to bring together key stakeholders to accelerate action to end the dual epidemics of TB and HIV in the region. The meeting with the theme: “Building Bridges to Strengthen our Responses” was held in Manila, Philippines on 12-14 March 2019, with a focus on revitalising primary health care towards achieving universal health coverage, supporting the rapid uptake of new guidelines, expanding access to diagnostics and new drugs, harnessing digital technologies and capitalizing on the changed financial landscape.

A new digital platform for timely analysis and use of TB data

22 March 2019 - The WHO Global TB Programme has developed and is supporting country implementation of a new digital platform to store, analyze and visualize national and subnational TB surveillance data. The platform will facilitate timely planning and programmatic action.

Call For Contribution To The Public Consultation On The Development Of A Global Strategy For TB Research And Innovation

21 March 2019 – The World Health Organization (WHO) has produced a draft Global Strategy for Tuberculosis (TB) Research and Innovation (Global Strategy) for consideration by the World Health Assembly (WHA) at its 73rd session. The draft Global Strategy is now available online for comment.
Deadline: 8 May 2019.

UNGA high-level meeting on TB

The United Nations General Assembly first-ever high-level meeting on tuberculosis (TB) aims to accelerate efforts in ending TB and reach all affected people with prevention and care. It will be convened by the President of the General Assembly in New York on 26 September 2018 under the theme “United to end tuberculosis: an urgent global response to a global epidemic”.

World TB day

World TB Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the burden of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide and the status of TB prevention and control efforts.




Global Ministerial Conference

The Global Ministerial Conference “Ending TB in the Sustainable Development Era: A Multisectoral Response” aims to accelerate country implementation of the WHO End TB Strategy in order to reach the End TB targets set by the World Health Assembly and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Ministerial Conference will inform the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on TB in 2018.

WHO's End TB Strategy

The strategy aims to end the global TB epidemic, with targets to reduce TB deaths by 95% and to cut new cases by 90% between 2015 and 2035, and to ensure that no family is burdened with catastrophic expenses due to TB.
