Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most pressing challenges for humanity. It affects all areas of health, involves many sectors and has an impact on the whole of society. Increasing resistance threatens to roll back the achievements of modern medicine as many medicinal procedures rely on effective antibiotics. Antibiotics, more than other medicines, can be considered a public good for which society has a collective responsibility. The Symposium will offer a forum to exchange views and experiences, to achieve a better understanding of the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance and to envisage possible ways forward.

In November 2015, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon convened a High-Level panel to find solutions to increase access to medicines. On request of the Panel, WHO has provided a general submission as part of the consultation process to support the work of the Panel. This submission briefly presents some relevant WHO experience in access to medicines, cooperation between international agencies, and a number of projects WHO is currently implementing to foster the development of health products that address priority health needs.

WHO has launched a survey to identify the 50 top technologies people need worldwide to improve their lives. The survey, issued in the world’s 50 most spoken languages, will use the information gathered to build the WHO Priority Assistive Products List (APL), a tool that will set the standard for the most essential assistive products that must be available in a health system.
