WHO scales up cholera vigilance in Khartoum, Sudan
5 November 2019, Khartoum, Sudan -- To prevent a potential spread of the current cholera outbreak to Khartoum State – including to the country’s capital Khartoum City – and at the request of the Federal Minister of Health Dr Akram Eltoum, WHO is working closely with health partners, nongovernmental organizations, and at-risk communities to ensure that suspected cases are quickly identified and responded to, and that people can effectively protect themselves from infection.

1 November 2019 Maiduguri - Not so long ago, collecting and evaluating large amounts of data in the field on disease trends and patterns – an activity known as surveillance – was a cumbersome process. Surveillance officers noted information by hand on paper and sent hard copies of weekly reports to the local government area (LGA) secretariat via disease surveillance and notification officers (DSNOs).

Surveillance and rapid detection of an Ebola case are proving to be vital tools in the race to end this outbreak, and case numbers have been dwindling for the past several months. To provide quicker lab analysis needed for quick detection, the Government, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and partners, expanded on an approach started in the previous outbreak but with only a single unit.
