Elite pilots hunt down an ancient starship packed with sick colonists

Sometimes, it's worth reading the news. When a story in Elite: Dangerous' fictional feed ended with an unexpected call for supplies in the Upaniklis system, most would've thought it flavour text. Not Malic_VR, a pilot and Elite streamer, who went to see what this minor fuss was all about. What he found was a dilemma that'd make a brilliant Star Trek plot - an ancient…

Blizzard blasted by US congressman for letting racism fester in World of Warcraft

Last week, Blizzard once again returned to Anaheim for Blizzcon 2019. But rather than welcoming Blizzard to his city for their annual convention, Rep. Lou Correa - a Democrat congressman for Anaheim, California - accused them of fostering online radicalisation in World of Warcraft. Less than a month after finding themselves in the US Government's crosshairs for their mishandling of a Hearthstone championship protest, Blizzard's…

Hitman 2 celebrates its first year with month of swashbuckling murder

Has it been a year already, Hitman 2? With 12 months of murder in the bag, IO Interactive have eyes on the next step in Hitman 47's next adventure. Whatever form Hitman 3 takes, though, there's still a good deal of death left to dish out. November will be Hitman 2's biggest month yet, with no less than 2 new special events landing each week…

No Players Online offers free spooks on the empty servers of a dead multiplayer game

A shortcut for long-gone mech shooter Hawken sits on my desktop. It's not the real deal, of course. Hawken went offline early last year. What I have, stitched together from salvaged code and networking wizardry, is an abomination. A corpse of a game forced back into life by players who can't let it go. It'll never be alive, but that's not going to stop us…

Diablo IV’s Barbarian looks brutal in 24 minutes of skeleton bashing

Sticks and stones may break on bones, but fists will never fail me. Now that Diablo 4 has emerged from its crypt, soaked in the blood of countless demons and undead ne'er-do-wells, we're starting to get more glimpses into the Action-RPG's grimdark fourth offering. Fitting, then, that our first extended look at the next dungeon-looter isn't some cowardly archer or wimpy wizard, but a brutal…

Apex Legends finally gets a proper training mode alongside a limited duos mode

Halloween has come and gone from Apex Legends. Zombie hordes have vanished, replaced by the bitter chill of a November bloodbath. As the year cools down, it's time to warm up. This week's Apex patch 3.1 finally adds much-needed training mode Firing Range - a freeform arena for trying out all of Respawn's toys - and a duos mode to pit you and a friend…

Devolver Digital allege self-care app “ripped off” platformer Gris

Like it or not, it's hard to argue that Nomada Studio's debut Gris isn't an absolute stunner. Alice B found it a bit bleedin' obvious with its themes of feminine fragility and trauma in her Gris review, but that doesn't stop it being an absolutely gorgeous picturebook platformer. She wasn't alone, either. This week, publishers Devolver Digital alleged that a French studio has "ripped off"…

Modders have created Dark Souls’ first custom map – and it’s from Half-Life

Like the chosen undead they follow, there are few walls in the Dark Souls modding scene that can't be broken without persistence. Since the original PC release was salvaged by stubborn fans, Dark Souls's modding community has spent years breaking a game that defies being broken. For the longest time, though, getting custom level geometry was a boss beyond modders' might. But once more, through…

Red Dead Redemption 2’s frequent crashes are putting a stop to wild west antics

Well rustle my hard drive, Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally on PC. Yee-haw, and all that. Thing is, some gunslingers out there are spreading word that this ain't the sturdiest horse they've seen. From loading screen crashes to problems with Rockstar's game launcher, RDR 2 on PC is proving to be a grumpy ol' mule indeed.

Mosaic brings maximum discomfort on PC next month

As much as I might like winter, it's hell for commuting. The buses are crowded, the darkness has sapped the colour from the air. Each day feels like it begins after the journey out and ends before the trip back home. The perfect time, then, for Krillbite Studios to release Mosaic - their eerie corporate follow-up to 2015's Among The Sleep. After a four year…

Dragon Age writer David Gaider’s videogame musical Chorus hits its funding goal

It's time to face the music. It's time to light the lights. After a little under a month, Summerfall Studios' mythical murder mystery Chorus has been successfully funded on Fig and announced a suite of stretch goals to shoot for in the campaign's closing days. More than just another RPG with words from the bloke wot wrote Dragon Age, David Gaider, Chorus wants to be…

SkateBird x Jazz Mickle’s Pro Cap Wearer Do A Spoopy Combo is a free feathered fashion show

You've got the moves, but have you got the looks? Aviary kick-flipper SkateBird might be gunning for Tony Hawk's long-vacant throne (with an actual hawk, no less), but you've got to nail more than grinds to take on Pro Skater. It's music, it's attitude, and it's fashion, baby. There's not a 360 nose-grind to be found in SkateBird x Jazz Mickle's Pro Cap Wearer Do…

Sea Of Thieves goes overboard with skeletons in this month’s Fort Of The Damned update

It must be hard to make Halloween updates for a game where most enemies are swashbuckling skeletons. But that's just what Sea Of Thieves is trying to do with Fort Of The Damned, October's harrowing Halloween twist on Rare's sea shanty. With a damnable new castle and skinless pets, Sea Of Thieves wants to make sure your timbers have thoroughly shivered.

Fallout 76 delays Wastelanders, but private servers arrive next week

Fallout 76's long-awaited flesh-and-blood NPCs won't be arrive in West Virginia this year. Bethesda has delayed the free Wastelanders update into early 2020, leaving players alone in the post-apocalypse with each other for a few months longer. But there's a silver lining to this mushroom cloud. Private Worlds finally arrive in Fallout 76 next week, giving survivors the option for some much-needed permanence.

Observer and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare are this week’s Epic Games Store giveaways

It's Thursday again, meaning its time for Epic's ongoing cycle of free games to tick over once again. This week's offerings are grimy cyberpunk horror Observer and bizarre spin-off Alan Wake's American Nightmare. That'll be that sorted for some low-lit thrills, then. As per, you've only got seven days to grab these freebies before they slink back into the shadows from whence they came.

Last week’s Hearthstone college protesters finally face suspension

A college Hearthstone team that raised a "Free Hong Kong, Boycott Blizz" sign on-stream during their Collegiate Championship game last week has finally been suspended by Blizzard. With their own finals taking place shortly after Hearthstone Grand Champion Chung "Blitzchung" Ng Wai's now-famous protest and subsequent punishment, the American University Collegiate team jumped in to support their fellow pro. It took only two days for…

Radioactive shooter Chernobylite enters early access today

To my partner's enduring frustration, I never got around to Stalker. What I have instead is a photo book of Soviet Bus Stops and an enduring love of massive, decaying concrete monstrosities. Thus, while I might not have the frame to judge Chernobylite, a singleplayer survival shooter from The Farm 51 as a worthy successor to Stalker, there are certainly enough brutalist oddities to pique…

Massively unfair strategy AI War 2 leaves early access next week

The training routines are almost complete. After a year of sneaking through early access, the sequel to Arcen Games' cult classic AI War is ready for deployment. AI War 2 is bringing us back into the vastly lopsided fight against the machines next week. But there's one final update to get through before we kick off the war in earnest, one that gives menacing AI…

Paradox pull their Stellaris mobile game after nicking Halo artwork

Despite being a spreadsheet-filled management sim from the most PC developers out there, Stellaris longs to leave its desktop orbit. But while the space sim's transition to console has been relatively smooth, it's having a tougher time entering the mobile space. Stellaris: Galaxy Command, a mobile spin-off by an external studio, launched into beta on Tuesday but Paradox pulled it from sale only five hours…

Dicey Dungeons biggest update yet adds new spells and re-rolls tricky challenges

Dice? Cards? I often feel Terry Cavanagh's quite brilliant little puzzler Dicey Dungeons could've easily been a board game. Thankfully, it's a videogame, meaning balance changes and new challenges don't require sourcing a printer to download pages and pages of errata. All you need to get a hold of today's 1.5 update, the "biggest since launch", is a couple of minutes of internet access, and…
