Half-Life: Alyx’s first screenshots are here in 4K for your ogling

Now Valve have formally announced the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx, we can pore and coo over its first screenshots in shiny 4K resolution. The VR exclusive (which Valve tell us really does need to be VR, else "for all intents and purposes it would be an entirely different game") is set a few years before the return of Gordon Freeman and stars Alyx Vance as she…

Valve say “It’s very difficult to imagine Half-Life: Alyx in a non-VR form”

"VR is essential to the experience of Half-Life: Alyx," Valve have told us following today's formal announcement of the new VR-only game starring Alyx Vance. Our Graham got to ask a few wee questions of animator Christine Phelan, who explained a fair bit about the game's origins. She told us it began as an experiment in virtual reality using bits and pieces of previous Half-Lives,…

Half-Life: Alyx is a VR prequel to HL2, coming in March 2020

Valve today formally announced Half-Life: Alyx, a "full-length" game exclusively for VR. Half-Life is returning after 12 years, though Gordon Freeman seemingly is not and this isn't Half-Life 3. Set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2, this one stars future sidekick Alyx Vance in the years before Gordo's return when she and her dad were building the resistance. And yes, this really is…

Valve confirm “hardly anyone” is working on TF2, so the community has made their own plans

There's a ticker at the top of Creators.TF project website. "0762 days since the last major update", it reads, with the aim of inspiring people to join a homebrewed Team Fortress 2 update campaign. Someone has to, they reason. Long-time Valve employee Greg Coomer has told Valve News Network host Tyler McVicker that "hardly anyone" is working on it, and they're "just going to try…

Steam Remote Play Together leaves beta, bringing couch co-op online for all

Local multiplayer's always been a strange fit for PC. Desktops, shockingly, live on desks, often in cramped corners with sole-occupant seating. It's rare indeed to find a PC setup with room for a sofa. Nevertheless, there are some absolute bangers on Steam, their tantalising multiplayer offerings locked away for those rare nights you can squeeze three mates into a bedroom. Enter Steam Remote Play Together,…

CS:GO’s new battle pass adds character, but can’t leave loot boxes behind

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has never been all that interested in world-building. It's an esport: the pro players are the real characters, inhabiting faceless Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists in high stakes matches where every bullet counts. Operation Shattered Web mixes things up, bringing a host of new player skins with CS:GO's first-ever battle pass. Now, you can stride through time-worn battlefields as a gruff n' tough special-force…

Confirmed: Valve will reveal “flagship VR game” Half-Life: Alyx this Thursday

Update: The rumour was true, but the date was wrong. Valve have tweeted that they're going to unveil Half-Life: Alyx, their "flagship VR game", this Thursday at 10am Pacific/6pm GMT. This will be the first official Half-Life game since Half-Life 2: Episode 2 was released twelve years ago, in 2007. And that's all we know for now. Original story: Right, time to grab all the…

Steam now lets you ditch its fancy new library for a more compact alternative

Change is scary, I get it. Over Halloween, Valve put a bullet in the old Steam library and brought in a flashy new look, filled with visual flair and more customisation for your categories. But what if you liked things barren? What if you just want a big flat list of all your stuff to pick from? While the old library is dead and gone,…

Steam’s new library is out of beta, bringing a new way to search and sort your games

Valve have decided that Halloween is the perfect time to kill off the old Steam library, replacing it with a more customisable screen for your games collection. I hope that doesn’t come back to haunt us, because I can’t handle being chased down a dark alleyway by the angry spirit of the old UI. The old library screen is dead and replaced by a new…

EA games are returning to Steam, starting with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Electronic Arts are returning to Steam after a long hiatus. The first game to come over to the dark side is, appropriately enough, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order on November 15. It'll be followed by the EA big guns of FIFA 20, Battlefield V, and more next year. And they're bringing their subscription service, EA Origin Access, which is a real surprise.

Valve block Counter-Strike loot key reselling to fight money laundering

From today, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's loot box keys can no longer be resold on Steam's marketplace. Valve are putting a lock on their keys because of the global gangs of evil-doers who were using the keys to launder money. From now on, any key bought will be bound to the purchaser's account.

Google’s AI moderation shows results in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive became a slightly less accurate name, as 20,000 accounts have been banned from FaceIt's platform since late August by the recently-unleashed admin AI Minerva. After months spent in machine learning trials, the system built with Google tech led to a 20% reduction in the number of toxic messages between August and September

Dota Underlords has finally added Underlords

The Underlords of Dota Underlords are no longer a naming flourish, today becoming actual units leading our armies with handy perks and abilities. Valve name today's update The Big Update because, well, it is. Along with the first two Underlords, it adds new heroes from Dota 2 and new Alliances with new bonuses. A Duos mode has arrived too, with teams who can play on…

Steam Remote Play Together takes local multiplayer games online

Playing a multiplayer game shoulder-to-shoulder with pals in the same room is grand but does, y'know, require being in the same room. For times when you want to play those local multiplayer games but aren't all together, Steam is adding a technomagical way to play them online. It's called Steam Remote Play Together, it entered open beta testing today, and it should work with all…

Dota Underlords is adding prison

I presumed Dota Underlords was already set in some sort of dungeon, so it pleases me that Valve will soon add an additional prison. This is just one part of the upcoming Big Update, which will add a buncha new heroes while substantially changing how the game works. Valve will be jailing 8-12 random heroes each day in an attempt to keep things fresh, but…

Feature: Or: why Knight, Mage, and Troll are disgustingly powerful

Dota Underlords alliances tier list [October] – the best alliances in Dota Underlords

The carefully crafted selection of Dota Underlords alliances available to you each match is one of the game's defining features. Just as much as deciding which heroes to use, where to position them, and which items to equip yourself with, your combination of alliances will decide who lives and who dies on the 8x8 battlefield. With all the minor and major updates that have happened…

Dota 2 has ended frustrating solo matchups against five-stacks

After eight years, Valve have finally updated Dota 2's matchmaking system to end those frustrating situations where five randos are thrown together against an organised party of five. You know, where your team starts bickering over buying wards and you end up muting at least one teamie, while they're laughing with their natural rapport and practised teamwork. Awful. No more! Thanks to last night's update,…

TF2 turns twelve, celebrates with Scream Fortress XI

Spooky season is upon us. I know this, in part, because someone has already covered the treehouse windows in cheap cobwebs and I can't gaze broodingly at the completely normal, not at all unsettling events of the outside world in 2019. But the real clue is Team Fortress 2's Halloween event, back once more with two new maps, a buncha hats and a temporary re-opening…

Steam will soon let you play local multiplayer games online

Oh, the possibilities. Late night TowerFall tournaments, no longer restricted to the too-rare occasions when I'm in the same room as my internet friends. I might get to finish Overcooked 2, this time with a pal who finds efficient cooking more entertaining than winding me up by pretending to mistake fire extinguishers for lettuces. Multiple developers have revealed Valve's plans for "Remote Play Together", which…

MacOS’s 32-bit-breaking Catalina update is live, wreaking havoc on classic game collections

Well, it's finally happened. On Monday, Apple released the feared MacOS "Catalina" update, killing compatibility for dozens of 32-bit games. From this week onwards, updated Macs just flat out won't run 'em. In the constant churn of developing newer, faster, and sleeker operating systems, the Mac makers have given curators of older games a simple choice: put in the work to bring your games up…
