Marvel Studios dropped by San Diego Comic-Con's Hall H and confirmed its Phase 4 slate on Saturday, but one film announcement also confirmed it will feature a rather unexpected character.

During the star-studded panel, Marvel confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will be back for a second Doctor Strange solo film, the brilliantly-titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and it was also revealed that Elizabeth Olsen will feature in the film too.

Yep, that's Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange starring in the film together.

"Just announced in Hall H at #SDCC, Marvel Studios' DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS with Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen. Scott Derrickson returns as director. In theaters May 7, 2021," Marvel's official announcement on Twitter read.

According to the panel announcement, the Doctor Strange sequel will tie into Marvel's upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, which centres on Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch) and Paul Bettany's Vision.

With not many details to go on, it's all just speculation at this point as to how they tie together, but Kevin Feige explained during the panel that the events of the Disney+ series will lead Wanda to Doctor Strange's doorstep.

Meanwhile, director Scott Derrickson teased that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be "the first scary MCU movie", will take inspiration from the original comics and also incorporate "the gothic [and] the horror" in Strange's new adventure (but it'll probably still be rated PG-13).

"I think it's vital to maintain the humour of the first film, but with this twist of horror," Cumberbatch added.

There were no updates on Chiwetel Ejiofor's MCU future though, after the actor portrayed Strange's eventual nemesis Baron Mordo in the first movie back in 2016.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is released on May 7, 2021.
