Box Office: ‘Joker’ Conquering Newcomers With $60 Million

Box Office: ‘Joker’ Conquering Newcomers With $60 Million
It’s still all smiles for “Joker,” which grossed another $17 million on its second Friday at the domestic box office.

If estimates hold, the Warner Bros. villain flick could score another $60 million come Sunday, down just 37% from its $96 million box office debut. That’s above earlier predictions, which saw the film landing somewhere in the $50 million range, and could push the movie past the $185 million mark by the end of the weekend.

“Joker” also had no problem conquering this weekend’s box office newcomers MGM and United Artists Releasing’s “The Addams Family” and Paramount’s “Gemini Man.” Likely fueled by family audiences looking for a more family-friendly alternative, “The Addams Family” came in at No. 2 with $9.7 million from 4007 locations. If estimates hold, the film should take home around $33 million by the end of the weekend.

Robert Forster, Oscar-Nommed Star of ‘Jackie Brown,’ Dies at 78
Robert Forster, a prolific character actor who was nominated for an Oscar for Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown” and appeared in more than 100 films, died Friday in Los Angeles of brain cancer. He was 78.

Tarantino created the bail bondsman character Max Cherry with Forster in mind, and the role netted him his first Academy Award nomination.

Most recently Forster reprised his “Breaking Bad” role as Ed in “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” which was released Friday, and appeared in Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories” and in “Werewolf.”

David Lynch cast the actor with a distinctive weathered look in “Mulholland Dr.” and in the rebooted “Twin Peaks” as Sheriff Frank Truman.

“I’ve done a lot of genre pictures in my career…I’ve always liked them,” Forster told the Bleecker Street blog upon the release of 2018’s indie drama “What They Had.”

Forster played Tim Allen’s father in “Last Man Standing,

Gal Gadot to Play Polish Heroine ‘Irena Sendler’ in Holocaust Drama
Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot will produce and star in “Irena Sendler,” based on the Polish heroine who saved thousands of Jewish children during the Holocaust.

“Irena Sendler” has been set up with Warner Bros. through Gadot’s newly formed Pilot Wave with producing partner and husband Jason Varsano. Marc Platt will also produce.

Justine Juel Gillmer, whose credits include “Harry Haft,” will be writing the screenplay, based on Sendler’s work in the Polish underground in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. Sendler worked with dozens of others to smuggle out children, provide them with false identification and place them with families. She was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 and tortured but never revealed any information about the children.

Gadot, a native of Israel, is also producing and starring in “Wonder Woman 1984,” which will open on June 5. She’s starring in Kenneth Branagh’s “Death on the Nile

Idina Menzel in Talks to Play Evil Stepmother in ‘Cinderella’
Idina Menzel is in negotiations to join Camila Cabello in Sony’s “Cinderella,” portraying the evil stepmother.

The news comes a day after the revelation that Billy Porter was in talks to play Cinderella’s fairy godmother. Sony had no comment on either possible casting.

The stepmother role, also known as Lady Tremaine, is based on the original character from the Cinderella fairy tale created by Charles Perrault in the 17th century.

Menzel is best known as the voice of Elsa in Disney’s “Frozen,” in which she sang the Academy Award winning song “Let It Go.” She won a Tony for “Wicked” and was nominated for “Rent” and “If/Then.” She reprises her voice role in the upcoming “Frozen 2” and appears in A24’s upcoming crime drama “Uncut Gems.”

Cabello came on to the project in April with “Blockers” director Kay Cannon attached to helm and pen the script.

‘DC Super Hero Girls’ Shows Girls As They Really Are, But With Superpowers
Lauren Faust, the executive producer of Warner Bros. Animation’s rebooted “DC Super Hero Girls,” is on a mission: to right the wrongs committed by past series for girls.

“Too many shows for girls are less about inspiring them, less about entertaining them, less about reflecting their experiences back to them, and too often almost come across as lectures on how we expect girls to behave,” she told an industry audience at Cannes’ trade show MipJunior Saturday, as she discussed her animated show, which airs on Cartoon Network.

“That’s why [the female characters] end up being very soft, and very nice, and

How Robert Forster Broke Out With Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Jackie Brown’ and Never Looked Back

How Robert Forster Broke Out With Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Jackie Brown’ and Never Looked Back
It is no surprise how many people are expressing grief at the death of Robert Forster from brain cancer at age 78. It was far too soon. He’s actually on screen now, in Vince Gilligan’s “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” which hit both theaters and Netflix this weekend.

Anyone who met Forster knows what a kindly man he was, often handing out elegant silver letter openers to set visitors and new acquaintances; he gave me my second at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where he was promoting the intimate family drama “What They Had.” He steals the movie and provides its emotional center as the tough but vulnerable patriarch doggedly hanging onto his wife (Blythe Danner) as she slips into Alzheimer’s.

Bryan Cranston described his “Alligator,” “Breaking Bad,” and “El Camino” costar Forster as a “lovely man and a consummate actor,” he tweeted. “I never

‘Monos,’ ‘Atlantics’ Take Home Awards at London Film Festival
“Monos,” an unsettling thriller about teenage soldiers that one critic described as “like ‘Lord of the Flies’ in hell,” has won the award for best film at the BFI London Film Festival.

Mati Diop’s “Atlantics,” which premiered in Cannes, took home the prize for best debut feature, while “White Riot,” about a 1970s reggae protest movement, was named best documentary. The awards were unveiled Saturday, on the eve of the festival’s closing.

Directed by Alejandro Landes, “Monos” premiered at Sundance. To an evocative score by Mica Levi, the Spanish-language film follows a group of teenage soldiers and their hostage, an American doctor, as they retreat farther into the jungle.

“‘Monos’ is a stunning cinematic achievement, marrying dynamic visuals, faultless performances and groundbreaking storytelling,” director Wash Westmoreland (“Colette”), the president of the official competition jury, said. “It’s a masterpiece.”

The jury also awarded special commendations to Sundance title

Does ‘Joker’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?

  • The Wrap
Warner Bros had a rough couple years with its films based on DC Comics with “Batman v Superman” and “Justice League” taking a beating from pretty much everyone, but it’s a very different story these days. Right now they’ve got “Joker,” the most talked-about movie since “Avengers: Endgame” — and one that is already a resounding success at the box office.

Though the film’s critical reception has cooled considerably since it garnered a lengthy standing ovation in Venice, moviegoers are showing up in droves to see what this thing is all about and get in on the discussion.

So “Joker” is already a hit, but how big of a hit will it be? Could it reach the level of “Logan,” which grossed $226 million domestic and $619 million worldwide? That will depend on whether the popular response to the film falls on the side of the Venice Film Festival attendees

With Shep Smith Gone, Is Fox News’ Transition to Propaganda Complete?

With veteran Fox News host Shepard Smith’s surprise announcement that he’s leaving the network on Friday, can it still be argued that the network is anything but a propaganda machine for President Donald Trump, in the same way Russia’s Rt “news” network bends to the will of Russian President Vladimir Putin?

Smith, who was part of the network’s founding staff when it launched in 1996, signed off his Friday broadcast by saying goodbye, “Recently, I asked the company to allow me to leave. After requesting that I stay,

It’s Weird That We Don’t Know What ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Is About

It’s Weird That We Don’t Know What ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Is About
When I watched that “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” sizzle reel back in August, I was surprised by the reminder that “Episode IX” will be the end of the main series of “Star Wars” movies. Not because it’s news to me, but because nothing about this feels like the end — and certainly not like the culmination of a grand story told over the past 42 years.

How could it? You’d be hard pressed find anything in the first two entries in this new trilogy that moves things toward some big finale. And frankly, it’s impossible to watch the previous eight numbered “Star Wars” movies and think, “Yes, the next one is the end of the story” without being told it is. You’d simply never come to that conclusion on your own.

Here’s what we know about “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.” The

The Rihanna Navy asked, pleaded, begged for an album, and Rihanna delivered – sort of. Many of the photos across the 504-page tome would be made public for the first time ever, and to top it all off, the book would come in three limited editions with very Rihanna-worthy names: “This Shit Is Heavy,

Logic Asks ‘1-800, Then I Kill The Pussy, Who Can Relate?’ The Answer, No One
On a macro-level, the existence of French Montana’s “Twisted” featuring Juicy J, A$AP Rocky, and Logic makes sense. French, Juicy, Rocky, and Logic are stylistically distinct rappers covering demographics that span different ages, geographical boundaries, incomes, and discerning tastes. In the current landscape, why wouldn’t the four rappers try to expand their fanbase and thus line their pockets with that sweet, sweet streaming cash? Judging “Twisted” on that criteria, it’s a middle-of-the-road French Montana posse cut. For the majority of its runtime, “Twisted” merely exists on

Journalists from across the TV-news sector will miss Shepard Smith at Fox News. The bean counters at the cable-news outlet’s parent, Fox Corp., will not.
