1000 Ebola survivors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Goma, 4 October 2019 - As the 1000th Ebola survivor returns home, United Nations agencies working to stop the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today commended the strong leadership of the DRC health authorities and the tireless efforts of thousands of local health workers and partners that have led to 1000 people surviving the disease.
Ebola, cholera and measles: Triple threats to the poorest communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
1 October 2019 -- Kasika is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Goma, the largest city in the North Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was in Kasika that Goma’s first case was detected. But Ebola is not the only disease to scourge the residents of Kasika, who live in close conditions, under tin roofs, with no running water, no flushing toilets and little sanitation. Cholera and measles are also surging through the community.
How fighting Ebola is helping one hospital prevent other diseases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
26 September 2019 -- Kitatumba Reference Hospital nestles on a hill in Butembo, which has been fighting an Ebola outbreak for the past year. With more than 80 health workers infected with Ebola since the outbreak came to the city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, health facilities like Kitatumba are critical battle fronts. “This hospital was built in 1923, and many of the buildings are old, which makes it a challenge to maintain infection prevention and control standards,” says Dr Eugene Syalita Nzanzu, the Medical Director.
WHO and partners launch emergency vaccination campaign to help contain world’s largest measles outbreak
25 September 2019 Kinshasa – With the world’s largest and fastest-moving measles epidemic continuing to expand throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Government with the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners today initiated a third emergency campaign of vaccinations in 24 health zones, targeting nearly 825 000 children aged 6–59 months.

Second Ebola vaccine to complement “ring vaccination” given green light in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
23 September 2019 -- The health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have announced plans to introduce a second experimental Ebola vaccine, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, from mid- October. This vaccine, which is given as a 2-dose course, 56 days apart, will be provided under approved protocols to targeted at-risk populations in areas that do not have active Ebola transmission as an additional tool to extend protection against the virus.

September 2019 -- Until recently, following up with people who have come into contact with Ebola was a complicated task for contact tracers like Kanyere, working in one of the epicentres of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where suspicion can quickly reach a fever pitch. A Go.Data, a mobile application created by the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) group, WHO and partner organizations, Go.Data is a major innovation in outbreak investigation tools for field data collection.
