The SMU and Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT) team, PeopleForWords, won a grand prize in the $7 million Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE presented by Dollar General Literacy Foundation. The team developed "Codex: Lost World of Atlantis," a game app designed to increase literacy skills of adult learners struggling to read. PeopleForWords tied with Learning Upgrade from San Diego, CA and will divide the grand prize purse. The XPRIZE is a global competition that challenged teams to develop mobile applications to increase literacy skills in adult learners. Read more.
A generous gift from the Toyota USA Foundation has enabled SMU Simmons, Dallas ISD, and Toyota to form a partnership to develop a STEM-focused School in West Dallas. The School will feature an evidence-based, industry-informed STEM curriculum and community services that include extracurricular academic programming and student and family counseling. Read more.
